New admin bar feedback
-
After the recent update to the admin bar, there is no longer a direct link to my site from the classic dashboard. This was previously available with the “View Site” link. I use this link to be able to quickly open my site and often do a little post searching. The removal of the link is a regression and a big inconvenience to my workflow.
Additionally, with the removal of the hover menu, I cannot immediately tell which site I’m working on. There should be a way to tell which site I’m working on at a glance without having to search and read too much.
Furthermore, I realize that the aim is to get users to use the new stats page, but the removal of the traffic sparkline does not make me want to do that. I used the sparkline to tell me at a glance whether it was worth it to check my stats, because it is neither worth my time nor healthy to check stats frequently. If I saw a spike or drop in my view count, I would go look at my stats because that was unusual behaviour; otherwise, I would assume everything was normal.
Please consider reinstating the link, the traffic sparkline and perhaps the menu as well.

Thanks, timethief. I haven’t been on the forums in a while, so I guess it slipped my mind to do that.

Yikes! I made a mistake. Tagging for Staff removed. Please copy and paste into the sticky post at the top of the forums.
It’s the season of fa la la so, of course Staff have fa la la la-d around making changes that are giving rise to negative feedback
There are 2 sticky posts to be aware of:

Hi, @tpenguinltg
To view your site from the WP-Admin dashboard, click on My Sites, and then click the blog link/blavatar that appears under Switch Site. The admin bar menu was switched to be on par with the Calypso menu, so it mirrors the behaviour there with the exception that in Calypso clicking the site link opens a preview of the site in a pop-up, while in the admin bar it directly opens the site.
We’ve had several requests to bring the sparkline back, and I’ll add yours to the list. This is definitely being considered, though regarding the menu I think I can say with certainty that the change won’t be rolled back.

Thank you for the quick reply, @kokkieh. I agree consistency is a good thing, although I have to wonder how many people will be using both Calypso and the classic dashboard almost equally as everyone will prefer one over the other.
I’m glad to hear the sparkline is being reconsidered. I suppose I’m kind of okay with not having a menu as long as there’s a quick way to know which site I’m in at a glance, which the method you described is not. Come to think of it, on a previous iteration of the admin bar, the space where My Sites is now used to have the site’s name and blavatar, and I think I would even prefer that over the menu.
Enjoy the holidays!

I’m not sure I follow. If you click on My Sites, the site title/link/blavatar should be at the very top of the menu. If you’re not seeing it there, or if I’m misunderstanding, please let me know.

I liked having it visible there as well, but the idea behind My Sites is to have a seamless way to manage multiple sites without constant page reloads. We can debate the usefulness of that ( and there has been many internal debates about it as well) but at the moment that’s the direction we’re heading. Feedback is always welcome, though, either here, or even directly in the wp-calypso repo in GitHub if you want to contribute there.
I hope you also have a wonderful Christmas :)

Oh, I didn’t realize that a sidebar appears when you click it. That makes things a whole lot better! I didn’t realize it because I saw it was a link to the stats page and nothing popped up on hover. It was not obvious to me that a sidebar will appear when I click it and was going to say something about context switching. Even just a tooltip would help give that hint.

Indeed, and I can respect that. There will always be a group of dissatisfied users no matter what you do. The best way to keep the number of dissatisfied users is to allow choice and to give ample communication about major changes. It also helps if, given choice, it doesn’t become unnecessarily difficult to choose any one option over the other.

Thanks for that feedback. I’ve passed it along to the developers working on this.

There are two things we’re constantly discussing and working on. The problem with choice is the overhead involved in maintaining two interfaces, but I’ll pass the feedback along :)
