New Beta Site Editor: Deleting Spacer removes SM Menu
-
I was trying out the new site editor to edit a page template with my theme (zoologist). I deleted a spacer in the header to remove some of the white space between the logo, navigation and social media icons, and the first cover block. I didn’t make any edits to the Navigation block, but after I clicked ‘save’ and viewed the updates, the Social Media menu (added in the Customize section based on the template) was gone. The regular page navigation links were still there.
Is there a reason deleting a spacer would interfere with the social media menu?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It’s possible the menu was inside of the spacer, giving it some padding.
You can add it back with a Social Links block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/social-links-block/

Thanks! I tried your suggestion. Unfortunately the added social media block isn’t appearing. As a test, I replaced it with a paragraph block that said ‘TEST’ and it appeared. This is without removing the spacer block, which is what I was originally trying to do.
It’s not a big deal, it’s a nice-to-have to remove the spacer, but I wonder if this is a bug.

It’s likely not a bug, but you may have not selected the individual element you wanted to delete? We have no way to see how you did that, so it’s tough to know what exactly happened.
I would recommend turning on “List View” so you can see each individual element and nested element in your page template – I’ve found it quite helpful when I’m trying to find and either delete or move something around. You can read more about this here:

Thanks! I tried this but unfortunately it still deletes social media icons as well. I would think that would be tied to the Navigation block? Did I still delete the wrong thing?
I tried to manually add in the social media icons (I did not delete the spacer or anything else), and next to it I added a paragraph block which says ‘TEST’. When I save the updates, I only see the ‘TEST’ and not the facebook icon.
I tried to include these in the screenshots above, not sure if that helps. It’s more of a nice-to-have to delete the spacer, but at this point it’s more about my curiosity about what I’m doing wrong so I learn to do it right next time.

The Social Links block https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/social-links-block/ is a separate item from the Navigation block: https://wordpress.com/support/full-site-editing/theme-blocks/navigation-block/
So you’ll need to add the Navigation block, and then add the Social Links block, and drag them around to position as desired.

Thanks, I tried and it’s not appearing. It only appears if I set it to show links, not icons/logos. When I click on the list of menu options it shows a bunch of duplicates, but in the Appearance -> Customize -> Menus section it only shows two menus: Main (for Primary Navigation) and Social Media (for Social Navigation).

Thanks for your help! At this point I think I have to throw in the towel. I will leave it with the template defaults.

Hi @sierscse,
Zoologist’s default header will show the primary and social links menu (set in the Customizer). However, as soon as the header is edited in the site editor, social icons disappear because there’s only a navigation block present. You’ll need to set your menu and social links in the site editor. Here’s how:
- Edit the header (e.g. remove spacer block) in Appearance → Site Editor
- Also in the header, add a new row block
- Move the existing navigation block into the row block, and set your menu
- Inside the row block, add a social icons block
- Save changes in the site editor
- Optional: deselect the primary and social links menus in the Customizer
Here’s a screenshot of what that looks like in the site editor:
Hope that helps!
