new block editor
-
Does the new block editor require more bandwidth? I tried using it yesterday, with the available hot spot (not great!) and got nowhere fast. Everything was VERY slow, photos took forever to load, and I wasn’t able to get back to Classic to compare because things were so sluggish. If you tell me it doesn’t need faster internet, I’ll give it another try.

Hi there,
I haven’t experienced any slowdowns using the Block editor. Can you please try a different browser and let me know if you’re getting the same results?
-
The new block editor is useless – I just spent four times the time I usually take to post, and still can’t post it – photos in the draft are missing in the preview; I can no longer easily tile photos the way I want, and can’t find how to rearrange them. As one of my blogging friends said, if it ain’t broke, WordPress will break it.

Hi kayak2016blog, sorry to hear it. If you’ll send a few more details we’ll see if we can help, or file a report at least.
– Are you using an app or a browser, and which one are you using?
– Can you send a link to the affected post or page?
-
This is the post I posted second, because I couldn’t get these photos to show up in preview: https://wordpress.com/view/kayak2016blog.wordpress.com
The previous post is the one that wouldn’t take those photos. I use Firefox. Is there any way to get back to the old system? That worked great for what I wanted to do. Thank you – -
We have tips for transitioning from the classic editor to blocks https://wordpress.com/support/switching-from-the-classic-to-the-block-editor/ and FAQs: https://wordpress.com/support/replacing-the-older-wordpress-com-editor-with-the-wordpress-block-editor/#frequently-asked-questions
And, if you really want to use something like the classic editor, we recommend sticking with the classic block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/
For more details, please see https://wordpress.com/blog/2020/08/13/the-classic-editing-experience-is-moving-not-leaving/
We do recommend the new editor though, and we have some extensive documentation available at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/
For the sluggishness, first please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/
If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.
If it is, please do these two things:
1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.
2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.
Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.

I’ve learned a couple of things – at least in today’s attempt. I have to use “Gallery”, not “Image”, to insert photos from media library – and usually have to do it twice for it to take. Which is a pain, but doable. I have been using “Classic Block. I still don’t see a way to tell it how to tile photos. I don’t need the complexity of your variety of blocks – simple is the way to go. Sluggishness was probably related to using a hot spot, not a good internet signal.
-
For tiling images, try a Tiled Gallery block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/tiled-gallery-block/
-
I tried that – but I was unable to create the tiled mosaic I wanted – something I’d done multiple times in the old system. It used to be that I could choose not only the order, but whether I wanted them as a mosaic or stacked. It was much faster to choose several related photos, and stack them, then one at a time. And the old mosaic was very intuitive about how to put photos together, as long as I chose the right order. Not now.
-
You can still change the order in the tiled gallery block – if you click on an individual image in the block, two arrow buttons should appear in the top left corner of the image. You can click that to move an image forward or backwards in the gallery.
By “stacked”, do you mean having the images in a single column underneath each other? In the block sidebar, select the Tiled Columns layout, and set the number of columns to 1.
https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/tiled-gallery-block/#block-sidebar
Alternatively there’s a different block designed specifically for stacked image galleries:

-
Thank you – I’ll try those suggestions, and see if I can get back to doing the layout I want. Knowing to look for arrows? Not intuitive! And I didn’t see a number of columns for tiled images, and will look. This is very helpful – I hope!
-
Maybe sort of helpful? At least now that I know that stuff is hiding somewhere, when I have more time I can go messing around and see if I can find it! I tried, but don’t have more time to put into it. And it still doesn’t insert an image first try every time – I have to try as many as three times to get it to stick.
-
It’s getting better – I can now find “Stacked” in the media section, and if I choose upload, rather than go to my media gallery, the photo goes in first time every time. But being able to look in the media gallery makes it much easier to pick which photo comes next, and as far as I can tell it’s the only way to choose photos for tiled or stacked images. This morning it took as many as five tries to get a photo in from the gallery – and at four clicks each try, that’s a lot of frustrating clicking! So – go to media gallery, figure out which photo I want next, back out of that and go to “upload”?
