new block, etc.

I can’t believe how absolutely horrible the block editor is … it truly sucks. And trying to return to classic editor is nearly impossible. WordPress is trying to lose bloggers. I am thinking of leaving and I have four blogs on wordpress.

It is cold comfort but you are far from alone in feeling the way you do. I have to think it is a major mistake on the part of WP.

Hi,
You can try to access the Classic editor using this link.
https://wordpress.com/support/editors/#classic-editor
There is also a Classic block that is similar to the Classic editor.
https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/
The classic editor is being retired.
https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-com-classic-editor-deprecation-faqs/
Here is information about how to use blocks.

Using blocks with a little practice you may find is not as difficult as it might seem.

I know this is the company line but it really is not helpful. The Classic Block is not the same as the old editor and not all features work or are free of bugs.
The issue at its core is that the Block Editor is really for people who create web pages, for want of a better phrase, and are used to dealing with more complex tools to create more sophistica6ted pages. The Classic Editor is for users who just want to create a blog post or other sort of simple entry that does not involve lots of singing and dancing features. Unfortunately WP has gone to a one-size-fits-all approach with the Block Editor and has left that other user group hanging, as the Block Editor is far less easy to use and has many foreign aspects to those accustomed to the old editor. It really is very strange.

We have tips for transitioning from the classic editor to blocks https://wordpress.com/support/switching-from-the-classic-to-the-block-editor/ and FAQs: https://wordpress.com/support/replacing-the-older-wordpress-com-editor-with-the-wordpress-block-editor/#frequently-asked-questions
And, if you really want to use something like the classic editor, we recommend sticking with the classic block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/
For more details, please see https://wordpress.com/blog/2020/08/13/the-classic-editing-experience-is-moving-not-leaving/
We do recommend the new editor though, and we have some extensive documentation available at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/

Not to beat a dead horse, but the responses are always the same copypasta links to the same documents that really do not address the issue. It is like dealing with a machine dispensing AI responses to questions, rather than having an actual discussion on the topic. That is what I meant by “company line”. I recognize the difficult position both volunteers and staff are being put into here by being limited in that way. But it does little to help users like me and just adds to their frustration.
Saying the Block Editor is “effortless”, works “with ease”, or even is “not as difficult as it might seem” is simply not helpful given what hits users in the face when they first try it. That simply makes people like me feel dumb. I may as well be looking at something written in sanskrit given the many non-intuitive icons and formats that make little sense. I challenge anyone to read the section in the document linked on “Patterns” and have even a hint of what it does or how/why to use it, just to offer one example. The problem is in part that these functions are not something I ever used, and am unlikely to ever want to use. You have taken a glider and replaced it with a 747.
Even trying to use the Classic Block proves challenging because things are so confusing. In testing it I tried making a simple blog and was immediately derailed within the first line of my test post when I tried inserting a link. The link icon does not work properly and the only way I could move on was via someone eventually suggesting to not use the icon for linking (because it apparently never works as it is supposed to) and instead highlight the link and right-click it, which actually worked as intended. If such a simple function is seemingly calling two different pieces of code what other landmines await? It does not inspire confidence.
Given that the company is apparently determined to force users on to this I can only conclude that they are no longer concerned with the user group that does not create websites or write code, and who just wants a vehicle to create a simple page on WP. Just as in personal relationships, it is probably better just to cut us loose with a clean break instead of stringing us along and continually making us feel badly at being left behind.

Hi @gregbeau,
I understand your frustration and the fact that the block editor is not the classic editor (even when using the classic block).
What particular features are you missing in the block editor that you enjoyed in the classic editor? I’ll test out the link icon on this end and see if I can replicate that issue – it should work no differently than how it did with the classic editor.
Thanks,
-
When you test the link icon in the Classic Block, use the icon in the toolbar, paste the link into the pop-up. Then try to mask it with some text such as “This Link” via the edit pencil icon, and then try typing the rest of the sentence after it. In my case the entire remainder of the sentence became part of the masked text with no apparent way to stop it from happening.

I am going to WP admin and when I post I obtain classic editor … and then make the post … should this become more cumbersome … I am off to Flickr.
-
I know what you are referring to.
You need to press the right arrow to break the link and continue to type without the rest of the sentence not to be masked with the hyperlink as well:
The first try was without pressing the arrow first and the second try was when I did press the right arrow. Let me know if that works for you.
Thanks,
-
I’m sorry, I cannot follow the animation because it is way too small and moves way too fast. In any event I just tried this myself in another test post and I cannot even get the same result today that I did last time. The popup box that appears when you use the link icon looks the same as before initially but once a link is pasted in, there is no edit pencil now as there was before and which I believe I see in your example. There is also no place to enter text, just in the field containing the link itself, but when you place text over it and press enter nothing happens and the text does not appear in the post. I don’t know how things can change that fast but it seems to be different now. Since I am not able to create any masking text I don’t have the problem with the link continuing but I also now cannot embed a link within a paragraph and show it with a highlighted word or phrase. This is bizarre.
So let me ask the simple question which I didn’t actually ask before (because I didn’t have to): where within the popup that the link icon delivers does one enter text to mask the link?
I also did not have any success with the right-arrow “breaking” the link because it did nothing, apparently because there were no spaces or other characters in the line for it to move towards.
For what should be a simple function, this sure seems to be complicated.

Hi gregbeau –
If you click on the animation that my colleague shared it will open up a touch bigger with in the browser. It should also prompt a download of the file which you can rewatch as needed adjacent to your opened editor screen.
That still may not work, and I understand that it’s frustrating. If you’re still unable to figure out the links could you let me know specifically what link you’re trying to place where on the site? I will try it from my end.
-
Thank you Liz, clicking on the animation let me see it more clearly and I can follow it now.
So what I am taking from that is that you need to type the word or phrase that you want to mask the link in the body of your post first (perhaps leaving a space at the end) then highlight the desired text, and then click the link icon?
I’m almost certain I hadn’t done that before when I got the continuous link problem, but if it works then it will be OK. I am still baffled by what I saw before though as this seems quite different. Some more explicit explanations of this in the help documentation would be a good idea as I looked there and didn’t find much on this topic and certainly not this technique. Thanks though!

That is correct, yes (the leaving a space part :) ). Though I would suggest you finish typing the entire sentence, before going back and highlighting the word or phrase you want to link. That would also prevent the issue where you start typing and the new text gets included in the link.
You can also highlight the text, and then just press Ctrl/Cmd-V to paste it, instead of clicking the link icon first.
