I am investigating WordPress to discover a trade for my present site. I would prefer not to take out a membership until I am certain that I can locate the correct layout. Additionally, I would prefer not to utilize my present area until I am sure. Each road I pursue on WordPress requests that I join or move my space. I simply need a safe, disconnected condition where I can test thoughts until I am fulfilled that WordPress is the answer for me. I would welcome any counsel or direction.

These are great questions. Yes, you can do this.
The suggestion to add a domain or buy a plan is coming in the sign up flow based on earlier choices. You can ignore it. Sign in to WordPress.com and click on My Sites – Add New Site. Type in the desired address, pick the free option.
With that you can test any layout and even build an entire functioning site for free. If you’d like to hide it and keep it private just make sure you’ve picked the right settings:
