New blog

After 5 years, I’m still confused on the connection of wordpress.com and wordpress.org but that’s not the reason for this question. I have a public blog that I self-host via wordpress.org. I went into wordpress.com and attempted to start an anonymous blog however upon publishing, I see that my name is listed as the author so I immediately made it private. Is there a way to keep the anonymous blog but make my profile/author anonymous? I see I can go to my profile and adjust it but I’m concerned that will make my public blog anonymous too and I don’t want that. Does that make sense?

  • Sure thing. If you want a public Gravatar profile for your main site, and a fully anonymous site here, I’d recommend just creating a second account and transferring site ownership to that.

Or, change the email address so it’s not associated with your Gravatar, as I’m guessing that’s the connection between the two (though it’s hard to tell without looking at both sites).

As for the connection between .org and .com: .org is an open source community and its software. WordPress.com is a service by Automattic (founded by one of the co-founders of WordPress). Automattic offers hosting, Jetpack, Gravatar, WooCommerce, Akismet, and a handful of other apps and services. I hope that helps explain the connection.

So on your .org instance, your public site, you’re likely using Gravatar. And if you use the same email address here, it will be using the same Gravatar as well. Honestly I’d just create a different account or use a different address. You can even use an email alias.

Does that help? If not, send more details and we’ll go from there.
