New Blog concerns

    Brand new. 1st WP blog ever. Got theme. Clicked on email i was sent, to activate Blog. Questions:
    1. Using WP.com How will I know if any plug-in, theme or widget I want to install is FREE? Will each one say if it is free before I download or install. Where? I don’t want any surprise charges.
    2. Im using wp.COM . Is there anything I NEED to install or am supposed to have on all WP.com sites, i.e…any bottom of pg. notice such as: “this site powered by WordPress?”
    3. If I change themes (to another free theme) is there any charge for switching? Will I lose data and have to re-post?
    4. How do I add monthly Archive of posts? and categories?
    5. Can I add tags to bottom of all my posts? Is there a limit of 5 tags?

    1) you can’t download and install any Plugin’s – the allowed Plugins and Widgets are installed for you.

    2) The footer credits are pre-done you don’t do anything (also don’t try and hide them – that is against the Terms of Service and will get your site suspended)

    3) change free themes as many times as you want – no charge for changing – no data will be lost – but some themes look way different than others – you will not need to repost

    4) Archiving is automatic – you don’t need to do anything – you can add an Archive Widget (standard under the Widgets section – drag and drop) to the sidebar to make it easier for visitors to find older Posts

    5) you can add Tags and Categories to your Posts – no limit – but if you go over 15 I think you will be flagged as a tag spammer and your SEO / search engine stuff will drop and search engines will not like your blog as much

    Sites here are turnkey – no need to do much other than to start writing

    If I want to add or drag & drop a widget (using wp.COM) will it tell me whether the widget is FREE, or not?

    Exactly what kind of widget are you referring to?
    Be specific please.

    re: the front page error message found on every new .wordpress.com blog

    It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching can help.

    There is nothing wrong with your site. By default the front page of the blog is the only page that will display all published posts on it. As soon as you publish a post not a page the front page error message and searchbox that appears on every new WordPress.COM blog will be gone. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

    The widget concern was simply: for any widget I might want to drag-n-drop or install, how can I avoid an charges and know in advance if the widget is free, or not. I received another answer that All drag and drop widgets are free .
