New blog doesn’t have “editor” link under Appearance section

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi I am starting a new blog and would like to copy the header.php from my old one. In my old blog I have an Editor link under Appearance where I can select the source.. In my new blog I have anHeader, Edit Css link.. but doesn’t show the same thing. Header just goes to a page where I can insert an image. And Css goes to a css edit page..

How do I get the Editor Link to show up under Appearance for my new blog? Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hello there,
We users of wordpress.com blogs like the one linked to your user name cannot access let alone edit the pgp and HTML templates underlying our themes at all. This is a multiuser blogging platform and only Staff can access and edit the files because any edits made affect all blogs wearing the same theme.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/

If you purchase the Custom CSS Upgrade you can modify the stylesheet of any theme but CSS here is specific so you cannot use CSS stylesheets from other themes. (The versions of wordpress.COM themes are different from the versions of wordpress.ORG themes.) Moreover you can ONLY edit the stylesheet you cannot affect functionality. Please be aware that there is no Staff support for CSS editing and precious little volunteers support. There is a Preview fuunction so you can try before you buy here > Appearance > Edit CSS

Sorry about the typo “pgp” was, of course, meant to be “php” above.

Augh…. I see, I didn’t even realize there was a difference, I am trying to help out a friend that has a small business (wordpress.org), so I created a test blog to play with(wordpress.com)…

In the end (using wordpress.org), what they are trying to do is play with a new template, but are afraid that switching in a new template will possible delete their old custom header, sidebar etc… Is there a way to preview / try new templates, but easily switch back to the current one without losing anything. The ability to “go back” exactly what it was before. Thanks.

Sometimes people think they can export their themes from wordpress.COM to wordpress.ORG installs. This is NOT possible. The two run on different software and the themes by the same name we have at wordpress.COM have been adapted to run on our software.

What we can move from our wordpress.COM blogs into wordpress.ORG installs by use of the export and import features is blog contents including attached images and links in two separate files.

We can copy and paste all content in text widgets on our wordpress.COM blogs into text widgets on our wordpress.ORG installs.

Sorry you have set me straight on the wordpress.com vs wordperss.org. I no longer am trying to mingle the two…

I am guessing I probably should hop over to the wordpress.org site to answer the question on the wordpress.org blog, Can you preview new templates and have the ability to go back to what template you currenlty are using.. I have images/links loaded into my current header.php. If I switch templates, will I lose that information?

Do I have the ability to preview new templates, and also have the ability to go back to the original still in tact?

Thanks, you have been very helpful.
