New blog for wordpress.com or wordpress.org?
-
I have created a new wordpress.com blog that could possibly become a wordpress.org blog and hosted site. But at first I just want to see how much interest it generates before I pay for hosting etc. Do a lot of people do this? Is this the professional way to go or should I just create a wordpress.org site / blog and save myself the hassle of transferring later?
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks.

Thousands of people do this a year. If your plan is to eventually transfer, I strongly recommend the domain name upgrade from teh start, so when you move all your internal links and all links from other sites to your travel with you. Otherwise, those links will go to a dead blog.

Hi. Thanks for the swift reply. What do you mean by the domain name upgrade? Are you talking about the domain mapping? That’s what I am busy doing so when I transfer people will still go to my domain name so they wont have to type in a different address right?

I am also considering having two domain names mapping / linking to my blog. Is that free and can I just change the dns servers for my domain names so that they point to my blog? Will this make things complicated when I transfer to wordpress.org or would it just be a simple update for both domain names?
Thanks for your help! I’m still getting to know WordPress.

If you are just getting to know wordpress.COM, I strongly suggest you learn how to use the search link at the top of the forums. There is an entire FAQ on domain mapping, how it works and the cost. It would be redundant to copy and paste it all here.

Hi. Thanks I have already read and studied that link. I’m still not sure if I can add multiple domains, how this will affect the transfer to wordpress.org and if mapping is free. At the top of that link it mentions that it costs 10$ but then further down the page it says:
“….Once updated, go to Settings -> Domains. Put your domain name in the box, click ‘Add domain to blog’.
Your domain should then appear as a choice below that button. Next to the domain name it will say “Put blog here”. Click that.”
It doesn’t mention anything about payment. It seems that you only need to change the DNS servers and then just click on “put blog here”.

You must have missed this at the top:
Q: What is domain mapping?
A: This is where your blog is here at wordpress.com but it looks like it is somewhere else – on another domain. This is a paid upgrade.Domain registration costs 10 credits ($10) per year, per domain.
Domain mapping costs 10 credits ($10) per year, per domain.
Once you complete the steps, you will be guided to the system to pay.

As for whether or not you can have more than one domain point to your blog, you’d have to ask staff. It’s not something I remember encountering in the forum.

Yes I know what you mean. I did see that at first but if you see the bit that I entered it doesn’t mention going through a payment at all. It says that you have to click on:
Settings -> Domains. Put your domain name in the box, click ‘Add domain to blog’.
At the moment if I click on ‘Add domain to blog’ it asks me to pay 10$ but in the process they mention above it says that if you click on that link it is supposed to show your domain under that link and then you can just click on “Put blog here”.
Currently I cannot see any of that. Only the option to pay $10. I was just wondering if someone else has gone through this or perhaps my DNS servers have not been fully changed yet?

You cannot get this to work without paying the $10. The reason it’s not working now is, you haven’t paid the $10.
