I want to start my blog, I have registered domain at godaddy. When I write in the name at wordpress to start it says “sorry, that site already exists” , but when I google it, nothing is found.

    Hello,

Can you tell me what name you are trying to use when starting a new WordPress site?

When you first start a new WordPress site, what you’re creating is called a “subdomain,” like “mynewsite.wordpress.com.” This has to be unique across all other WordPress.com sites.

If you have a custom domain name (such as the one you registered at godaddy) you then map it to your “mynewsite.wordpress.com” subdomain. Once this is done, your visitors have no need to worry about “mynewsite.wordpress.com,” as they will use your custom domain name to access your site.

Let me know if you need more help with the first part (getting the subdomain right) or the second part (mapping your domain name to your WordPress site.)

    We’ll get it fixed up!

    Hello!

Thanks a lot. I would like to register the name colourfulsouls.wordpress.com. Then change as you described.

The domains I have are colourfulsouls.ch and colourfulsouls.com

When I wrote colourfulsouls.wordpress.com to start, the message said, it existed already. So I went to check on google what it is about, and under colourfulsouls.wordpress.com it said nothing found.

I wonder what is the situation now.

re: the front page error message found on every new .wordpress.com blog

    Nothing Found
It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching can help.

There is nothing wrong with your site. By default the front page of the blog is the only page that will display all published posts on it. As soon as you publish a post not a page the front page error message and searchbox that appears on every new WordPress.COM blog will be gone. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

I recommend using the step by step tutorial linked to the bottom of your Admin page https://learn.wordpress.com

See also the “Video Quick Start” tutorial http://en.support.wordpress.com/video-quick-start/

The support documentation is all found at the Support link http://en.support.wordpress.com which is also linked to on the bottom of your Admin page.

Note that every theme will have a detailed theme description page with set up instructions and a live demo site page that you can consult. Here’s an example:

    https://twentyelevendemo.wordpress.com/

    re: mapping an existing domain

WordPress.com provides free blogs and hosts them free of charge. There are no bandwidth charges. All WordPress.com blogs come with 3000 megabytes (~3 GBs) of space for storing uploaded files and images. Free features are listed here https://en.wordpress.com/features/

See here for details of all 3 plans http://store.wordpress.com/bundles/ offered by WordPress.com.
    Premium bundle details http://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/
    Business bundle details http://store.wordpress.com/plans/business/

Note that each upgrade applies to a single blog only and is for a single year only when it is due to be renewed.

We all pay in full for every upgrade at the time of purchase. Make sure you read the comparison very closely so you know exactly what the restrictions and limitations on WordPress.COM blogging are: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Read Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it and the domain mapping purchase here every year.

Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually and a domain name purchase and domain mapping are included in the Premium upgrade bundle.

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL.

If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the WordPress.COM blog, and as you own a domain URL already, you can see here for mapping an existing domain. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

It can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

    Hi szineslelkek,

First, I see that https://colourfulsouls.wordpress.com/ is indeed a current site on WordPress.com, apparently rather new, as timethief suggested.

Is https://colourfulsouls.wordpress.com/ on your WordPress.com account? That is, when you log in on wordpress.com, it should list any site(s) you’ve registered. You can see that in the upper left corner under “My Sites.”

If you somehow did register that, then great — you’re halfway through your problems!

Otherwise, someone else must have that site on WordPress.com, and you’ll need to come up with something else. It really doesn’t matter too much, since you’ll be using a custom domain name for the world to see. It could be even https://colourfulsouls2.wordpress.com/

Let me know how this part works out.

To reiterate what others have said and to provide more background.

colourfulsouls.wordpress.com was registered several years ago. If you did not register this WordPress.com domain it will not be available to you to use and you’ll need to choose another WordPress.com subdomain.

Once you have chosen a WordPress.com subdomain you may map a domain by following this guide:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Note, that your WordPress.com subdomain does not need to match that of your custom domains. Also all sites are required to have a WordPress.com subdomain before a custom domain may be mapped.

If you have other questions let us know.

    Hi,

I finally registered colourfulsoulsbasel.wordpress.com and I am setting it up.

I wanted to share my about page on facebook in a private group, but what comes up, is always the original text, the one before my changes.
I tried several times and on following days.

Is my blog not public yet? I can see the changes.

    Thanks,
    Judit

    hi Judit,

Your site is public, it may be that Facebook is keeping an older copy of the page in their history. Normally their copy (called cache) will be cleared after a few days but it may take up to a week in some cases.

One option to clear their cached copy is to enter the address of the page here: https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/

Then click “fetch new scrape information”

If you’re still having trouble let us know.

  • Unknown's avatar

    HI,
I did it and 21 hours later nothing has changed.

When do you think it is realistic to expect change?

    Thanks,
    Judit

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Judit,

WordPress.com can’t control what information Facebook has saved for your site on their end. If the steps bdukes shared earlier don’t work for you, you may need to wait a bit longer for Facebook to update that information. (You will need to post a new update on Facebook to see the updated information there.)
