New Blog name,new address

I want to change the name of my blog. I would also like to change the address. so instead of blog1.wordpress.com I want blog2.wordpress.com. I don’t want to lose any followers etc. Do I have to pay for redirection? I’m definitely a neophyte on wordpress

Good morning,
To change the name of your URL, follow the steps below:
1. Once you log on to WordPress.com, click on ‘My Sites’.2. On the left-hand toolbar, scroll down to “Settings” and click that link.
3. Scoll down, then click on “Change Site Address”.
4. Click the green box that says “Primary Domain”
5. Click “Edit Site Address”
6. A window will pop up–hover your mouse over the mikesmailbag.wordpress.com domain. “Change Blog Address” will appear. Click that link.
7. Enter your new website address and confirm!
Changing your URL will not cause you to lose any subscribed followers.
To change the name of your blog…

The General Settings let you control how your site is displayed, such as the title, tagline, language, and visibility.Go to the General Settings page.
Select your site to open that site’s General settings tab.

The first setting you will see is Site Title. You can now change it to whatever you would like!

The thing that got me hung up ( concerned) TimeThief was this line from that same “instruction page”
“After changing your blog address you can transfer traffic from the old address. You can do so by purchasing the Site Redirect upgrade”
I didn’t want to lose my small following and was curious if I should/must pay to redirect from old blog to new blog

As far as ‘traffic’ goes, that’s a different concept than ‘followers’. Essentially, if your website can be found through Google or you have posted it somewhere (like on a forum) and someone new clicks the old link, the ‘Site Redirect upgrade’ would automatically transfer the people clicking on the old link to the new link. Your followers, on the other hand, have subscribed to your blog and should continue to receive updates.
Does that make sense? =)

Your subscribers subscribe to receive updates from a specific blog address ie. a URL. Are you clear on that? if you do t purchase a site redirect upgrade then they will not be receiving the posts from the w address unless they know it exists and do subscribe to it.
7. The final option on this screen allows you to discard your current address. This option will permanently disable the address and you will not be able to reuse it. Only select this option if you are sure you will not use the address again. If you want to redirect traffic to the new blog, you can keep the address and purchase the Site Redirect upgrade. https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/

Edit: If you do NOT purchase a site redirect upgrade then they will not be receiving the posts from the new address, unless they know it exists, and do subscribe to it.

Also note that your username now linked to a deleted site. To make the new blog your primary blog go to https://wordpress.com/me/account and enter it under Primary Site, then enter the URL under Web Address, and click Update Account Settings.

so if you were following my blog,via email updates,now when I write a new post in the new blog name and URL , you will not receive notification via email?

I was told by a moderator that changing your URL the way instructed above is like changing your phone number, so, like changing your phone number, it stands to reason that if you send a text from the new number, people saved in your contacts list should still receive the text.
If you simply deleted your old blog and started a new one, you would need new subscribers.
I might be wrong, especially considering the expert advice from such a well established member like TimeThief, so I’ll keep looking for the answer and find a resolution one way or another. Thank you for your patience, Mike, and thank you for your expertise, TimeThief! I’d hate to spread misinformation. :)

Good news! After testing out my theory on my own blog, it appears that yes, because you changed your URL the way I suggested above, any e-mail subscriber or WordPress user who elected to follow your blog will continue to receive e-mail notifications, and your posts will continue to show up on their WordPress readers.
