New Blogger – technically challenged – help me, please…

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I’ve been trying for days to fix a couple of things. I’ve checked documents in Support, etc., I suspect the issue is me, but maybe not. I’m surrendering. Three problems –

    1. I would like to upload a photo from my pc computer and I can do that. The problem is I can’t crop it and I distinctly recall successfully cropping the one photo I used in the Header. This would be for within an article or on the side bar. Please help me. PLEASE.

    2. I’ve loaded two posts on my new blog – so far my only blog. I wanted to have the more tag displayed so that one entry doesn’t hog the page. I was successful in that but it comes out in the form of “…” and the reader has to go to the title, click it and then the page opens – this has caused some confusion – isn’t there a way that it will read “more” with an arrow, so they just click it and it opens?

    3. I noticed that most of the viewing was on the most recent post and only 4 reads of the first post – based on someone’s comment to my personal email, I think what’s happening is when I sent out the message to my friends to view my new blog, it opens directly into the most recent post, so they never see the Home page…. sigh – and I cannot tell because when I input the blog address the system knows it is me and leads me to the home page. (I think.)

Technically challenged and thank you for your assistance on this.

  • Hi there,

I’m really sorry you’re feeling like you have to surrender :) I hope to clear up as much as possible so you can go back to conquering your blog!

I’ve received a report of a user not being able to crop. You may have come up against the same issue. Could you try downloading Google Chrome browser and attempting to crop using that browser and let me know how you make out?

I see what you’re saying about the truncated blog posts on your home page. There isn’t a way to change that with the theme you’ve chosen. Some themes may have different options that would work better for you, but most will have something LIKE that, where the user will have to click the post title to read more. There may be some where the user can click the end of the post blurb to get delivered into the article. You can browse the available themes here:
    http://theme.wordpress.com/

If you click into a post, and then copy that URL from your address bar, that is what your readers will go to. If you send them the URL of your homepage, that is what they’ll see instead. So, if you send this out, users will see your homepage:
    http://chasingrabbitholes.com/

If you send this out, users will just see that post:
    http://chasingrabbitholes.com/2012/12/17/over-stressed-or-is-the-universe-playing-games/

Although they will be able to get to your blog homepage still. You can see that those URLs are pretty different, so it will be easy for you to keep track!

Does that help answer your questions? If you want some further clarification, please just let me know!

Zandyring, thanks for the advice. I had thought the “…” problem might be a limitation of the theme, but the support articles seemed to indicate it would say “more with an arrow.” Again, I agree when I first sent out notification of “launching blog,” I’m willing to bet I did it by clicking on the FB link for that entry. (learning….). I will try the Google Chrome browser – I had seen mention in one of the articles that it had a crop function.

My system needs an overhaul to support some of the newer versions. I had been using IE, but for Word Press it needed the latest, and I was still fond of Windows 98 (I know), while utilizing Office 2007 – turns out IE no longer supports Windows 98 after v. 8. So I downloaded Firefox, which works well but then started running into firewall problems. I’m guessing this is more info that you need, but I’ve been spending more time than I wanted to in getting past technology challenges – where I have to shake myself and ignore the desire for the perfect look and focus on the objective, which is posting.

Thank you so much for your full response!

  • Hi there,

Running the latest browser really will help you in a lot of ways; many sites are optimized to look and work the best in the latest browsers, and they’re actually much safer as the browser makers are sure to deploy security patches with each new version.

I know it’s hard to move on from an operating system that works for you :) But it will ultimately be safer for you and your computer!

    Cheers!
