New Category is saving as New Tag in the Menu

    Hi,

    I’m unable to add a new category in my Menu. I made a new category named Sketches and tried to add it, but it keeps getting added as Tag instead of Category. How do I solve this? The blog name is https://sinderellathewetcannonball.wordpress.com/.

    Hi there!

    You can only have one “slug” named sketches on your site – which would be a tag or a category. It sounds like you may have had a tag of the same name at some point?

    With your permission, I’d like to try and see if I can replicate the issue on your site. Just let me know and I’ll take a closer look.

    Hi, that’s what I initially thought. So I created a category named OOLALA which surely wasn’t there as a tag in any post. Result was the same. Yes, if you can, please take a look and let me know what the issue is?

    I’m not currently seeing the problem as described, and I don’t see an “OOLALA” category either.

    Would you please try again, and if the problem continues, please don’t delete the category?

    Hi yes, the problem continues. Now there is a category named OOLALA and there is also a Menu item named OOLALA, which is a Tag, although when I added this new item in the Menu, it was added as a category. So the Menu is still refusing to add a new category and adding a Tag instead.

    Also, I created a post named Test Post Under New Category and put it in the category OOLALA. But when I click this particular Menu item OOLALA, it’s not showing that post at all (naturally, since it’s a tag, I guess). But it’s showing all sorts of other posts which surely do not contain the tag OOLALA.

    If you can help me sort this out it would be great because this stops me from adding any new category from now on.

    Hi there,

    I had a little look around on your site, and I think that this only happens with Categories that are using the same name as an existing Tag.

    What I mean is, there was already a tag OOLALA on your site (there are 19 posts with this tag), when you added the category.
    When I created a test category and added it to your menu, it was added correctly.

    If you slightly change the name of the tag (or the category), does it work as expected?

    Hi, yes, looks like you’re right. Though no idea how so many posts got tagged with OOLALA! Still confused, but the problem seems resolved. Thanks a lot. So, does this mean, it’s not allowed to name a category with a word which has already been used as a Tag?

    That appears to be the case at the moment, even though you should be able to add a tag and a category with the same name. I think when you create a tag and category with the same name and they also have the same slug, they conflict with each other. We’ll definitely look into that and I’ll update you with anything that I find.
