new comment button not working

The little square button at the very top of my dashboard on the black bar between “new post” and my name doesn’t seem to be working. When it changes to orange it means there is a new comment or something is afoot (right now it is orange and it has a cross in the middle). Before when I clicked it, it would open up the comment but now it just thinks about it for a long time until I just go elsewhere. Can you fix it? Can you even understand what I am talking about?

I know just what you mean — that little box is the notifications icon, and it lights up when you have a new notification (about a new comment, a new follower, etc.).
It looks like you’re using the Firefox browser. If you use a different browser (like Safari) do you get the same problem there?
If not, it’s likely caused by a setting or add-on in your Firefox browser. Can you please try temporarily disabling any extensions/add-ons in Firefox to see if that makes a difference? You can go to Tools > Add-ons in Firefox to view and disable those extensions.

ARGHHHHH it works in Safari but even with a through clean out it refuses to work in firefox. sigh I guess I need to decide how important that it is to me.
Thanks for actually understanding what I was trying to describe and for the suggestions. For some reason I never think that it could be my browser. duh -
Well, that’s a bummer! One thing you might want to try is resetting Firefox:

If problem you’re having is caused by a Firefox setting or something else that’s hard-to-find in the browser, this can help resolve it for you. It’ll also keep all your bookmarks so you don’t need to worry about losing those in the process.
