Upgrading to Personal Plan, how will I arrange to transfer my domain and email to my WordPress plan? Do I have to provide payment details before I can find anything out?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi –

I want to make sure I understand your plans.

Do you already have a domain that you plan to use with your WordPress.com account?

I Lizkarkoski! Yes I do already have a domain to use with my new WordPress.com account.

  • Ok. Thanks for clarifying.

What you’ll want to do is upgrade your plan. Go to wordpress.com/pricing/ to see the side by side comparison of each plan and the features that come with it.

After you add the plan to your account you’ll want to click on My Sites > Domains > Add > Already own a domain? Map it!

Here are the complete instructions: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

Let me know if you get stuck or have any trouble with this.

Thanks lizkakoski! My existing provider has advised me to contact the new provider to ‘initiate transfer their end’ once I have canceled my domain with them, and obtained their transfer code. How will I contact WordPress.com to initiate transfer?

  • WordPress.com is not able to accept domain transfers. So, to use this domain you’ll need to map it to your account and then edit the name servers to point to WordPress.com.

so once I have canceled my domain with current provider, and obtained their transfer code, I also need their ‘name servers’ to point to WordPress.com? Where do I find their ‘name servers’?

  • The domain can’t be transferred to WordPress.com. You’re going to need to leave it with the registrar. Through the registrar you can edit the DNS. Specifically, edit the name servers to WordPress.com. This will tell the internet to show your WordPress.com site with your domain.

Thank you – I’ve looked at the ‘map existing domain’ article and it refers ‘DNS settings’ – I now realise this is the same as ‘name servers’.

It seems my old host and WordPress.com have different protocols – my old provider provides a code to unlock my domain, but WordPress.com don’t require an unlock code – they want the old provider’s ‘DNS settings’, but only after the domain has been mapped.

I must check with my current host for clarification.

Hi lizkarkoski! I checked with my current host/registrar and they told me how to edit the DNS to WordPress.com, but
my friend who is a programmer wonders if changing the domain tag is advisable as WordPress.com will then have my domain? He suggests it may be better just to change what is called the main A record to point to my wordpress blog, to avoid having to set up my email again. I’m confused. What do you think?

  • The domain mapping is best via Name Servers not A records if possible. A records, or IPs are subject to change overtime. When that happens, your site will stop working until you make the update needed. Name servers are a constant value that do not change.

Again, for clarification, mapping the domain is not the same as transferring the domain to WordPress.com. We aren’t able to accept domain transfers, which is why you will want to setup the mapping. The domain will need to stay with the domain registrar or registrar of your choice.
