New dashboard

I’ve noticed that you’ve recently changed the format of the dashboard. Now, instead of utilizing the entire screen and displaying everything in large type as it was prior to this change, you now have everything crowded over onto the left half of my screen in a much smaller font, and over on the right side there are two empty rectangles, bounded by dotted lines.

I find this new arrangement to be quite unsatisfactory, particularly because everything pertinent to me now appears to be much smaller, and the entire right side of the screen is apparently wasted in what is a less-than-optimal use of screen real estate.

I much preferred the dashboard arrangement as it was prior to this change. Furthermore, I must tell you that I do not approve of this apparent WordPress policy of springing changes on us without prior warning, and without any kind of input from your user community, in which you people redesign everything from within your little bubble utterly convinced that whatever you cook up in your isolation will be greeted by your users with hosannas of hysterical praise at your clever genius.

The dashboard was perfectly fine the way it was, and I would appreciate it if you could restore it to its prior configuration. At a minimum, I would like to have those two empty rectangles done away with, regardless of whatever purpose you have in mind for them.

You know, if you really want to produce something useful for your user community, you would give us the flexibility to fully design our own dashboards as we see fit. Then we wouldn’t have these problems of you spewing your so-called creativity all over us, and you would not have to endure the ire of users who see things like this as nothing more than misguided arrogance on your part.

    You know?

  • Hi Dave,

Thanks for the feedback and we’ll take it under consideration. The two dotted rectangles are placeholders for you to use as you can move the various elements to one of the—in your case—four columns present.

We do value user feedback and try not to exist within our own little bubbles. The dashboard changes occurred “upstream” in the WordPress.org project (the software that runs all WordPress sites, those on WordPress.com and those that are self-hosted by users). The process was documented/discussed at WordPress.org (specifically http://make.wordpress.org/ui/tag/dash/ ) over the past few months.

I can’t promise anything, but I hear where you’re coming from and understand your frustration.

    Thanks.
