new design

    I’m trying to redesign a new website that will eventually take the place of our existing site, but I don’t want it live until we are ready. What activation route do I go in?

    Hi there,

    You can create a site in the usual way. You don’t have to launch it until you’re ready. When you are, you can launch it under the Privacy settings at My Site > Manage > Settings.

    Sorry to ask another dumb question… I was given 2 choices, either use the domain that you already have (which is currently in use with current site) or buy one from WordPress. Can I use the actual domain that is being used? or does it have to be somewhere else and then transferred over?

    I think you mean that you want to use the same domain as the already-existing website?

    In that case, I don’t think you can, as two websites cannot have the same URL. Although, as your account owns both sites (I think), there might be a way? (The WordPress staff, or another volunteer, will be able to tell you if there is.)
    There is a way to start over with the site but keep the domain name, but that involves removing all content from the already-created site, and it sounds to me like what you want to do is keep the original site up and running until the new design is ready.
    You could try picking a similar URL? (Some of them are free, even if it says to ‘buy’ one from WordPress.)
    If you eventually delete the old site, there is a small possibility that the old URL will become available, but from what I’ve seen this opportunity can be quite small — for example, if the URL does become available again, someone might take it before you have a chance to.

    That’s just what I thought, though it’s probably best to wait and see if someone more experienced can help you as I’m not sure.

    You don’t explain where your current site is hosted. If your current site is hosted elsewhere then you can build a site here with a paid plan and map or transfer your domain to it.

    Hi there,

    What you could do is create a site with a free WordPress.com blog address. You are assigned a .wordpress.com or a .home.blog subdomain whenever you create a site with WordPress.com, so you can just use your subdomain as a placeholder as you build the site. The can remain private until you are ready to launch it.

    As others mentioned, once you are done developing the site, you can make the decision to transfer the domain over:

    map an existing domain:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

    Or even creating a new one:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/register-domain/
