I want wp to use my new domain: gunnelwounsch.se instead of wounsch.com, which has been taken over by somebody in the porn industry.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi wounsch,

Just to confirm — do you want to use gunnelwounsch.se as the custom domain for wounsch.wordpress.com (which will hide the free address)?

If so, this domain can be mapped or transferred to WordPress.com — both options will require a paid plan.

It’s worth noting that if you decide to map the domain, it will still need to be renewed through your current provider each year.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I do not quite understand your answer. I have paid Surftown for the webhotel and the new domain gunnelwounsch.se. And the content in wordpress is still there, but I just want the new domain to be seen instead of the old one, which has been bought by someone in the porn industry through some mistake.
Please explain what is meant by “mapped”.

  • Domain mapping is how you point your domain to a different service than the one you registered it with. By editing the name servers in the DNS record of your domain you can point it to a different platform.

In this case, you’d be mapping your domain towards WordPress.com which then tells the internet to load the WordPress.com version of your site with the associated domain.

From what I can see, wounsch.com is out there on it’s own. Neither gunnelwounsch.se or wounsch.wordpress.com are connected to that site.

Now, there is something odd going on that I haven’t quite figured out. When I go to gunnelwounsch.se it loads your free WordPress.com site. Typically, changing the primary domain to gunnelwounsch.se would fix that, so that the free site address gets hidden by your custom one (gunnelwounsch.se).

But, the issue here, is that your domain gunnelwounsch.se is not mapped to us, it does not use our name servers. Current name servers on gunnelwounsch.se point towards:

    ns1.surf-town.net
    ns2.surf-town.net
    ns3.surf-town.net

This shouldn’t happen because the domain does not point to our name servers which are:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

I’m going to have another colleague take a look at what’s going on. Do you know if your domain provider set up domain masking instead of the mapping process?

In any case, you’re rightfully confused :) This is wonky.

  • Hi –

I’m back. There’s a 301 redirect set up on gunnelwounsch.se pointing it to your free WordPress.com site.

What you need to do is contact the domain provider and tell them to remove that redirect. In place of the redirect they need to change the name servers on the domain to ours. Those are:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

That step is number 2 on this page: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

Then, you’ll need to figure out which plan is best for your site and budget and add that to your WordPress.com account. This plan includes the annual fee for your domain mapping. See here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Going forward, each year, you need to make sure that your domain registration on gunnelwounsch.se is renewed at your domain provider. The mapping will need to be renewed through WordPress.com.
