new domain and social stats

  • Unknown's avatar

My blog URL has been buildingmarketingstrategies.wordpress.com. This evening, I purchased the domain buildingmarketingstrategies.com and mapped the other one to it. However, since I did so, the new domain does not show the tweets, likes, etc. on my posts. Will those eventually show? For the time being, I revised the domain mapping to use the .wordpress domain as my main one. The social numbers are again showing.

    Thank you.

    Hi there!

I went in and switched your primary domain back to buildingmarketingstrategies.com and reloaded your page and everything seems to be displaying correctly:

What you might have experienced is your browser cache not refreshing properly when you switched to your custom domain. Here’s a reference that will help you clear your browser’s cache if you still have problems with your site loading under your custom domain:

Let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you. But while the social stats section is there, the various social media are not showing the numbers in the boxes (e.g., Twitter). That’s my question: are those numbers going to start appearing? For the time being again, I’ve switched back to the .wordpress.com domain. Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

Those number don’t update immediately, so you need to leave your custom domain in place in order for the stats to reconnect and update.

If you still don’t see anything after 48 hours after switching back to your custom domain, leave your custom domain in place and let me know so I can take a closer look.

    I hope that clarifies things!

OK, I’ve switched the domain back and will wait for the stats to reconnect. Thank you!

Hello again! Per your comment, I’m writing to let you know that it’s been over 48 hours and still no stats appearing in the social media section at the end of my posts since I activated my new domain.

    Thank you!

Thank you for the update! That is very odd.

I’m going to have someone on our development team take a look to see why your social stats aren’t updating properly. I’ll get back to you once I have more information. Please leave your domain in place while we go through this investigation.

In the meantime, let me know if you have any questions.

I have an update to this question.

I found out that the sharing numbers that are reflected in the official sharing buttons come from the other services themselves – Facebook, Twitter, etc. What those services use is the *exact* URL of the post when it was originally shared. In your case, all of your posts were published prior to adding your custom domain to your WordPress.com site. Sorry that I had the wrong information earlier.

Over time, as more people share your posts that have your custom domain URL, you will start to see your totals increase again. Since the numbers come from these other services, there’s nothing we can do to merge or update your prior numbers.

Going forward, using your custom domain will give you a better presence online and if anyone happens to click a link that was shared using your old WordPress.com URL, it will automatically be redirected to the custom URL post. So you don’t need to worry about losing connections on previously shared posts.

In addition, if you don’t want to have zeros showing on your buttons at this time, you can always switch to the “Icon & Text” button style under Settings -> Sharing until you see your sharing number increase again by checking your stats page:
    http://wordpress.com/#!/my-stats/

I hope that clarifies things! Let me know if I can help with anything else.

Thank you for getting to the bottom of the issue. I appreciate it. For the time being, however, I’m switching back to the original domain. I’ll eventually go with the new one, but will do so at a better time than this.
