New Domain Media Attachment Issues

  • Unknown's avatar

I went from a free WordPress domain to a purchased one through WordPress. When I did this, the media attachment pages did not change over. Even now that the domain has been active for weeks, any media uploaded to WordPress still shows the old domain for the attachment page.

I just uploaded a photo to my website digging40.com but the attachment page for the file shows this as the URL: https://peytonsprojecthome.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/20200223_100129-1.jpg
PeytonsProject was the free temp domain when I first set it up before I bought the Digging 40 domain. Can anyone help me resolve this?

  • Hi there,

Media attachment pages and media file URLs will still show the WordPress.com address even with a custom domain on the site, yes. This is normal.

The free WordPress.com address is not a temporary address, but exists for as long as your site will exist. That address is where your site is actually hosted.

When you add a custom domain, that is just laid over the free address, like putting a dust jacket on a book – nothing inside the book changes, just the way it looks from the outside, and the same way adding a domain to your site just changes the address visitors and search engines see, not the actual address where the site is hosted.

If you were ever to remove the custom domain, the site automatically reverts back to using the free address.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.
