new domain name and SEO
-
Hi,
I am trying to increase the chance of our brand new community blog to show in Google search on the first page. Currently, it is a self-hosted blog on wordpress.org. The name is very generic, somewhat shortened, and I don’t think anyone would type that as a search keyword.
I have more experience with wordpress.com platform, and I would like to start a new blog with the name that reflects the likely search terms.
Right now the domain name is ukrcommunity.ca but I would like to register a blog like ukrainianhalifax.wordpress.com because it is likely that people would search for this word combination.
My questions are — will Google “see” ukrainianhalifax if I map a new domain name over it?
Also, is it true that sites registered on wordpress.com are ranked higher (all other things being equal) because Google “trusts” this domain name? And if so, will mapping a new domain name change that?
Thanks.

Yes, Google will see it. For one thing, the URL of all your uploaded media will be on ukrainianhalifax.wordpress.com instead of the custom domain.

No, wp.com URLs rank higher because so many blogs are hosted at Wp.com. If you map a new domain name, yes, your SEO dips, but it comes back over the course of about four months. I generally advise people to get, and publicize, a custom domain as soon as they possibly can, so all the SEO and incoming links accrue to that URL.

Thank you for your reply!
I have just one more question — will ukrainianhalifax.org be a better choice than ukrcommunity.ca because it is closer to potential search terms?
As I understand, I can start with registering a new domain name instead of adding the old one, and the difference is only $5?
