new domain, old blog
-
<–domain stuff newb
1. My existing wordpress blog is falltoclimb.wordpress.com
2. I just purchased thebuggeek.com
3. What I want it to have all of the posts from falltoclimb.wordpress show up at thebuggeek.com I also want people to be automatically redirected from falltoclimb to thebuggeek so all traffic is directed to the new site.
Halp?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
Hm. Maybe this will all happen automatically if I’m just patient and wait a few hours for things to kick in?
-
You mapped thebuggeek.com to a new empty blog – you will need staff help to fix this: http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/ – search on anything then page down and click on “no…..” to enable the contact box. – you will need to have the staff transfer the domain mapping to the correct blog – that will save you a second domain mapping charge.
I will also mark this for staff attention as they also monitor the forums.
PS – once the changes are properly made it can take 24 to 72 hours for the changes to migrate to the far corners of the internet.

I have moved http://thebuggeek.com/ to falltoclimb.wordpress.com as requested.
Please let us know if you need any further assistance!

Oh, one more question…is there a way to make the blog invisible to readers briefly while I rejig a few things?
-
You can set it to Private and your visitors will hit a wall that says keep out –
Dashboard >> Settings >> Privacy >> I would like my site to be private, visible only to users I choose
I always caution against this if you have regular traffic and visitors – don’t get anyone out of the habit of stopping by – put a Post (make it Sticky if need be) that says “under construction pardon our dust” – I think that visitors are more tolerant than most people think
What are you planning on changing??
-
Hm, you raise a good point. My regulars are tolerant peeps and will put up will stuff I suspect. I mostly want to change some cosmetic stuff, the header, the layout a bit, and add some more tabs. I just wanted there to be more of a “TA-DA”! Than things coming in dribs and drabs.
-
You can set up a test blog – use a variation of your base blog so you don’t burn a good address. Export some of your material from your site and import it to a test site – set the test site to “Private” and test away – once you decide the new look changing things on your “live real blog” should only take a short time as you already have a template.
Sorry there is not s “copy config files” function so you will need to change the live site by hand – but if you already have a template the work goes quick.
