New Editor

I don’t understand the way the new WordPress Editor works. It is complicated and I just don’t like it. I was told when talking with WordPress support on Twitter that eventually the classic editor won’t be available anymore and everyone will have to use the new editor. You shouldn’t force people to use something that they aren’t comfortable with and don’t understand. If I lose the option of using the classic editor, I’ll move my blog to a different platform. This is ridiculous.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi jackielizn –

Thanks for your feedback. The classic editor is going to still be available :)

I can pass along the specifics about the trouble you encountered with Gutenberg if you can provide some more details for me here. Then I can share those with the team.

Will the classic editor be available for good? The support person I spoke with on Twitter said it would eventually go away.

  • We can never promise that any specific aspect of our platform will be available permanently, I’m afraid.

We’ve committed to supporting Classic Editor until 2022…

    WordPress 5.0: A Gutenberg FAQ

  • Unknown's avatar

2022? Well, then I will have to export my blog to another platform before that time comes, because I tried the Gutenberg editor and absolutely HATE it. It’s not intuitive and I can’t understand the block system. I even watched some instructive videos but just got even more confused. I’m a writer, not a tech person, and I just want to write my posts and not have to be playing around with “blocks” and not being able to see the whole page at once like I can with the classic Editor.

I’m very angry that WP just decided to make this huge change without finding out how the people who will be using it feel or whether they wanted that change. This isn’t the first time WP has done something like this and it’s extremely annoying and frustrating.

    WHY?

I am trying to switch back to the Classic Editor because the new editor is absolutely horrible. I clicked on your link above and followed the instructions, however, I do not have the option to switch to the classic editor like you say I should. Please fix this immediately or else I will cancel my account with WordPress.com and move my site to a different platform.

Not sure where I can give feedback on this new editor, but it is kinda not intuitive to the needs of the user. I can’t even change text to a different color and have them next to each other in the same paragraph now. It changes the ENTIRE colorization of all text. Sometimes you want text next to each other and a header to stand out in a particular way. I tried to use a new paragraph/block, but it ends up nearly an inch below the header text I was utilizing. This is a bit ridiculous. You had something that worked wonderfully to make something that looks clunky right now and not geared towards helping the consumer have content look professional.

Wordpress has lost track of its purpose by introducing this overly complex, fiddly and time-wasting editor ‘Gutenberg’. I use WordPress to write and I write about still images, photography. I want the result to be as simple as the pages in a book; words, pictures. I have no interest in stuffing about tizzing up my pages – it’s the CONTENT that matters, not how it looks. This new editor INTERRUPTS the writing process…where in the past I could just insert a new image and then keep on writing, now I have to stop, put in a ‘block’ for the image, then start a new ‘block’ of text and then if I want to reposition the image later I am faced with cutting text form one block to another to keep continuity…it’s just AWFUL. I’m retired and I pay good money to use WordPress that I could use for other things. You’ll soon learn that there are many other customers who feel as I do…betrayed. “We love positive and productive discussions” you say? Well I love it when you treat your customers with consideration and have the courtesy to politely ask before you force monumental changes on them. By 2022 I’ll make sure my content is hosted elsewhere.

Hear, hear Luckyyotter, and thank you for speaking up! Gutenberg is rubbish.

  • Hi folks, If your site is on our servers, you can switch back and forth between editors using the three dots in the upper right of your editing screen. Click those and click Classic Editor.

If you’re using your own copy of WordPress with another host (its forums are here), the classic editor plugin is available here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/classic-editor/

By 2022 the new editor will have seen plenty of improvement, I’m sure, so feel free to check in periodically and give it a try.

I don’t even have those three dots!

  • @ronwhited, you are using the classic editor for both sites on our servers.

If you’re struggling with the site that isn’t hosted here, please use this plugin:
