new editor
-
I am (was) a perfectly happy user of a free WordPress account, at home with the old standard editor. I DO NOT LIKE THE NEW EDITOR. It brings me nothing I need. I am extremely annoyed that I no longer have access to the Classic Editor, that I am FORCED to use the new one, and I resent that I must PAY monthly in order to install the Classic Editor plugin for the privilege of NOT using the new editor. Please reinstate the option or install the Classic Editor plugin for users of free accounts.
Your prompt response to this complaint and early action to restore the faith of myself and the many users of free accounts would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi there,
We are retiring the classic editor from the WordPress.com dashboard, but you can still use the features of the classic editor through the classic editor block:
https://wordpress.com/support/editors/#classic-editor
Here is our recent article explaining the move:
You can still visit the wp-admin dashboard (http://example.wordpress.com/wp-admin/) and use the classic editor there:
https://wordpress.com/support/editors/#classic-editor
We also have information on transitioning to the Block Editor, and Frequently Asked Questions.
Hope this helps. Let us know if you have any other questions.
Thanks,
-
The Classic Editor Block is not available as described in the linked pages above. Searching for ‘cla’ produces “No results found.”
You don’t explain WHY you are retiring the perfectly useful Classic Editor.
-
Also “You can also type /classic and hit enter in a new paragraph block to add one quickly:” per https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/#block-toolbar does not work.

You don’t explain WHY you are retiring the perfectly useful Classic Editor.
The classic editor in My Sites was our own in-house attempt to create an editor entirely running on JavaScript code, separate from the classic editor in WP-Admin which was the default editor in the WordPress software.
The block editor is now the default editor in the WordPress software, and in order to prevent incompatibilities with that software each time there’s an update, we need to make it the default here as well.
The WordPress software also still has a classic editor that’s enabled via a plugin. That plugin is installed automatically on all WordPress.com sites, and gives you access to the classic editor in WP-Admin.
Thus we’re removing our own version of the classic editor in My Sites, as it’s not feasible for us to continue maintaining it as well, on top of the two editors that form part of the WordPress software.
Also “You can also type /classic and hit enter in a new paragraph block to add one quickly:” per https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/#block-toolbar does not work.
Can you tell me what happens if you type
/classicin a new line in the block editor? You should see a block picker containing only the classic block, and selecting that and pressing Enter should insert that block. Also the Classic Edit option does not show as shown in this image:
If you just click the Add New button in WP-Admin, which editor loads? At this point it should be the classic editor, as that’s the preference you have set for your site.
Once the My Sites editor has been entirely removed, the Posts page in WP-Admin will start showing you the option to use either the block or classic editor.

Thank you for your comprehensive response. I’m still digesting it. From a practical p.o.v., this is what I’ve found partially in response to the new inormation and your questions. Am I missing anything?
Typing “/cl” in paragraph block offers some options:

Typing “/cla” in paragraph block offers NO options:

Typing “cla” in Block selection window says “No result found.”:

Hovering in WP Admin, Posts – Editor is offered – When clicked goes to Classic Editor:

. . .

This is good, however . . .
The Write icon, top line, third from right, whether from my site (when logged in), the My Site page, or the WP Admin My Site page ALWAYS goes to the new editor.
-
What are WordPress’s official names for My Site and WP Admin?
Is it possible to make WP Admin the default destination for the My Site icon, top line, first icon on the left? Seems to me I’d be quite happy living there as it has all the stuff I need.
-
Once you’ve typed classic once into the block selection window the classic block should remain your first choice in future.
But my advice is to get out of the habit of clicking the “write” button top right. Always go to wp-admin bottom left and use Posts/Add new. -
Or add a bookmark to your bookmarks bar for it
yoursite.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php

Deja vu all over again? I’m looking forward to the next editor that will replace the Block editor circa perhaps 2030 or sooner?.
-
Thanks to justjennifer for the newpost link. Great minds . . . . Realising that was my one remaining option I’d already made that bookmark.
Going back to the Classic editor and my workaround, here’s a new post with all the Block Editor code removed, and “No content” added as seen by the Code editor:

Here’s the same post, seen by the Visual editor. Note the Classic block – so I know it exists:

Note also that the documented ways of adding a Classic block are unavailable (to me). Entering cl in Search for a block, or /cl in a new block, yields a few options, entering cla (/cla) yields no results.
Again, many thanks to everyone at WordPress who has jumped on this thread.

Looking at your first screenshot, surely you’re already loaded up with a classic block. Typing should then reveal the full toolbar.
-
Indeed I was, but my point is how I managed that, essentially by using the code editor to remove extraneous code and enter random text. The Classic block then shows up in the Visual editor and behaves as expected. (Reminder, the screen captures were swapped: the second image should have been in the place of the the first to make sense of the text.)
Earlier, referring to a new post in the Visual editor, I said “the documented ways of adding a Classic block are unavailable (to me). Entering cl in Search for a block, or /cl in a new block, yields a few options, entering cla (/cla) yields no results.”
That hasn’t changed, seems to be a problem, and is not resolved.
-
@themagicrobot I feel sorry for you guys, but I hope there is a replacement for the block editor before 2030 as I am unlikely to be around by then. How about 2021? :)

Search for a block, or /cl in a new block, yields a few options, entering cla (/cla) yields no results.”
What happens if you start a new post in the Block editor, click the plus top right and type classic into the search box? Have you tried with a different browser (or clearing cache) in case your current one is playing tricks.

You’re welcome. That was our “go to” solution in 2015 and 2016.
If you are now trying out the Block Editor (good on you!) and you think you’ll only use a limited number of blocks, you can limit the number of blocks that appear for you in the Block Manager to just the blocks you need and use. (screenshot)
When in your post or page, click on the Ellipsis at the top right corner of the Block Editor and then click on “Block Manager” under TOOLS (see screenshot 01)
In the next pop-up window that opens, you can uncheck all the blocks that are not relevant for you either by unchecking individual blocks or entire sections by unchecking the box next to the section heading (see screenshot 02)
Unchecking that box doesn’t delete the block; it only removes it from view and you can always re-enable the block later if you decide to use it by checking the box again.
You can find a tutorial on getting started with the Block Editor at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/

@mumblefuzz .,am not a happiness engineer but let me contribute, just like you I have fallen in love with the classic editor and can’t let go, so what I did was add “classic-editor” to the end of the link of the post new page when in the new default block editor.
example “https://mywebsite.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php?classic-editorIt would open the local classic editor directly, you can bookmark the link for easy access in your browser whenever you want to add new posts, hope it works.
