New editor and WP 5.0
-
Hi there, I was wondering if there is a deadline to switching to the new wordpress editor? I also saw that WP is upgrading to 5.0? When is this? Is this related to the WP editor, or is it a separate upgrade? Thank you.

Hi there,
The current version of the open source WordPress software is 5.4.2. All WordPress.com sites, including yours, have been on that version of the software since its release several weeks ago.
The block editor was released as part of the WordPress software in version 5.0 in December 2018, but had been available on WordPress.com for a few months before that already.
The block editor is now the default editor on WordPress.com, but you still have the option to use the classic editor. We are in the process of phasing out our own version of the classic editor found at My Site ->Site ->Posts. Once that’s complete, if you create a post via that route it will always take you to the block editor. But the original classic editor will still be available to use from within the WP-Admin dashboard.
There’s not currently any deadline for when that editor will be retired, but new features are no longer being developed for that editor, and it’s no longer being prioritised for bug fixes, so thinking long term it’s certainly better to start getting familiar with the block editor, as eventually that will become the only officially supported editor in WordPress.
If you have any questions about using the block editor, we’re happy to help you with those :)
