New Editor – Awkward location of "Trash/Preview/Save Draft/Publish to" buttons
-
Hello,
I’m trying to get used to the New Editor, but find it hard to when there are features that can send me screwing up big time.
My grief here has to do with the “Trash/Preview/Save Draft/Publish to” buttons.
– Trash/Preview: I’m clumsy and it’s happened in the past, that I went too fast and inadvertently pressed Trash instead of Preview. Good thing that I can always retrieve the article, but still nerve-raking to now have to slow down and double-check that I’m pressing Preview and not Trash.
I’d much prefer seeing the Trash button, in its own corner, by itself.– Save Draft/Publish to: I’ve noticed that when starting a new draft, the blue “Publish to” button is to the right of “Save Draft”, but after the first save (and refresh the page), it moves to the left and the “Save Draft” button now becomes blue while “Publish to” is now white.
1 – it’s really confusing to have those two button switch places
2 – it’s even more confusing because whenever they swap places, I need to re-associate the blue color to its new function, and do that brain re-wiring again when I get started on a new article.
3 – when in the New Editor, I often press Save Draft (for peace of mind, since it no longer automatically saves to the server), and always find myself pausing for a few long seconds (because of 1 & 2) to make sure that I’m saving and not publishing a rough draft to a potential few hundreds of readers.Because I Preview and Save Draft quite frequently, I often find myself slowing down to make sure I do not mis-click, and this breaks/slows down my blogging flow.
In the Classic Editor, all those buttons were disjointed, in their own corner, which may not have made for the prettiest interface but at least, I was clear on what I what I clicking.
I personally think that Trash should be elsewhere, like in the right column, above Change Status, just have a the red Trash button and log there. This way it’s still visible, and gives less room for mis-clicking drama.
Preview and Save Draft could then be next to each other on the far right side, and have Publish To on the far left, by itself.
Anyway, this is just a quick brainstorming, and this setup likely has flaws of its owns as well. Thanks! ^^

This is incredibly clear and well thought out feedback on the editor. Much appreciated! I’ll pass this on to our devs to consider as we continue to refine the editing experience on WordPress.com.

Hello again ^^ and Thanks for the feedback!
So actually, to my big surprise, I just discovered that the blue button changes depending on what’s selected in Change Status. A rather unexpected behavior if I may say.
As I was testing to see how Change Status works, I found myself switching back-and-forth between Publish immediately and Draft. All that does is swap the button (and force my brain to re-wire which function is now blue) which felt redundant, and also felt like WordPress was trying to mess with my mind (haha).
I mean, why not just leave the buttons where they are and just change the color? Which, okay huh, I think it’s how it was originally (right?), so actually, why not just remove the blue color?
Which leads me to:
– I’m personally not a fan of the button in blue, it’s like screaming for me to click on it.
– it ticks me off particularly when starting a new article, because Change Status defaults to Publish immediately (don’t people usually start with a draft?), and so the button Publish to is in blue which is like telling me “Hurry up and publish me!”. This is rather stressful since all I want is take my time writing. (And Zen/Fullscreen mode won’t make the buttons disappear either :)To continue of the topic of Change Status and the buttons, but this time, in the case of a published post. Why having:
– Save Draft and Update buttons? Aren’t the two pretty much the same? In Classic mode, only Update was available once the post was published, which was less confusing and made the interface more streamlined. Whatever the difference is, the subtlety of it evades me on this one.
– if I select Draft as the status, I get Revert to Draft and Save Draft buttons, which really isn’t indicative of what they mean/do (especially for a published post). (Oh okay, after re-reading myself, I think I get it, and think that what’s meant here is Revert to Draft and Update)With all that said, I’m still a proponent of having Preview and Save Draft/Update together on the left, all the time. I know my case can’t be generalized but I’m quite a maniac so I Preview and Save frequently, so I like to have those buttons easily accessible. (And have Save turn into Update for published posts)
As for the “Publish to/Submit Review/Schedule on/Revert to Draft” buttons, it feels as if this should be dealt within the Change Status box. As it is right now, it doesn’t feel very ergonomic to click an option in Change Status, and have to check for the changed button somewhere else. Especially, now that the settings column has switched to the left of the screen, the two (Change Status and the blue button) are now on complete opposite side of the screen.
Sorry for yet another long message, and thanks for considering my feedback!

Addendum: I just noticed that there also was a blue button in the Classic Mode, but for some reasons, it feels less distracting than in the New Editor.
