new editor: how to view the post

I don’t like anything in the Block Editor. One of the problems is, I can’t find a ‘View Post’ button after I update a blog post.

  • Hi, thanks for the feedback. The View Post link appears in the lower left, with a notification that the post has been published. Can you see that?

And, do you have other feedback?

Thanks Supermovia I noticed that but it disappears after a while.

The classic editor is much better as part of an admin interface. I operate my WordPress sites mostly through the admin interface. The admin interface is the main reason I migrated from blogger.com. For example, I have the left menu available, and I use that menu all the time.

How do I get rid of the new editor and revert to the classic editor? Some articles mentioned an option to do that. The option is supposed to be available in the WP-admin, but I can’t find it.

If no choice, I will consider premium. I will also consider private hosting. If nothing works, I am ready to move my blogs elsewhere. The WP-admin interface is the main reason I migrated to WordPress and now you are taking it away.

A view post link can always be found under the Permalink section in the editor sidebar:

How do I get rid of the new editor and revert to the classic editor?

The block editor has been the default editor in the open source WordPress software since version 5.0 was released in December 2018. It is now the default on WordPress.com as well, as it’s no longer feasible for us to maintain our own internal classic editor alongside the WordPress editor.

So there is no way to get rid of the block editor – unless the people who make the WordPress software over on WordPress.org roll back all the work they’ve done over the past five years, the block editor is here to stay.

For now you can still access the classic editor from WP-Admin ->Posts, but that also won’t be available indefinitely. That editor is enabled via the classic editor plugin made on WordPress.org, and when that plugin was released it was with the caveat that it will only be supported for a limited time.

So long term it’s really best to get familiar with the block editor.

    Thanks for clarifying.

  • You can still switch to the classic editor when writing/editing posts/pages in your site’s Dashboard: https://wordpress.com/support/dashboard/

With that said, we do recommend the new editor though, and we have tips for transitioning from the classic editor to blocks https://wordpress.com/support/switching-from-the-classic-to-the-block-editor/ and FAQs: https://wordpress.com/support/replacing-the-older-wordpress-com-editor-with-the-wordpress-block-editor/#frequently-asked-questions

And, if you really want to use something like the classic editor, we recommend sticking with the classic block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/

We also have some extensive documentation available at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/

Thanks for the details. For now, when I create new posts and edit existing posts I bend over backward to avoid the block editor. To achieve this, I have to avoid the convenient buttons/links and use a few extra clicks to get to the classic editor.

(Am always using the admin interface. ) In the past, I simply click a post to launch the classic editor. Now it is the second link below the item, sandwiched between Edit and QuickEdit, and you have to hover to see these links.

I have tried the block editor more than 100 times over a few years and really prefer the classic editor. For example, classic editor shows the left menu including AllPosts, AddNew, Categories, Tags.

Q: if I switch to Premium or Personal, can I get rid of the block editor, and restore the classic editor as the default?

  • Q: if I switch to Premium or Personal, can I get rid of the block editor, and restore the classic editor as the default?

There is no way to make the classic editor the default, no.

The block editor is the default editor in the open source WordPress software made on WordPress.org, and has been since version 5.0 of that software was released in December 2018.

We have been maintaining our own version of the classic editor in My Sites since then to give people time to make the transition, but that classic editor has now been completely removed from WordPress.com.

The classic editor you see in WP-Admin is powered by the classic editor plugin available on WordPress.org, which is installed by default on all WordPress.com sites. But the classic editor cannot be set as default.

It also won’t be available indefinitely, as the classic editor plugin itself was only ever intended to be a temporary measure while theme and plugin authors updated their products to be compatible with the block editor. It was never intended as a permanent alternative to the block editor, and once that plugin becomes deprecated over on WordPress.org, it most likely won’t be available any more on WordPress.com either.
