New editor is ruining my articles!
-
Some time in the last week or two, a new version of the editor began removing whitespace from my articles. In spite of carefully inserting it in the editor, and seeing it there in preview, when I hit save the majority of it is removed. Not just on-screen, it’s actually removed from the text, which means I have to manually edit it all back, at which point it removes it again!
Is there any way to turn this off while the problem is fixed? Here is an example:
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Further note: when editing using the visual editor and then saving, if I edit the article again and examine it in the HTML version, I can see that all the P tags are missing.

Are you typing directly into the new editor?
Or are you copying and pasting from a document created in a word processor?
If you are working in the Visual editor, to get single spacing between paragraphs hold the SHIFT key down and simultaneously click ENTER at the end of the paragraph. If you are working in the HTML editor, a single click of ENTER will give you a single-spaced line, and two clicks of ENTER will result in double spaced lines.
Blog editors and word processors are not the same and do not work the same way. The web standard is one blank line only, so you cannot add more blank lines by pressing return repeatedly like you would do with a typewriter or in a word processing application. If you want to learn how to format and space your posts and pages see: http://en.support.wordpress.com/advanced-html/
If you are copying and pasting from a word processing document like Microsoft WORD note that the paste as WORD button was removed from the editor months ago. If you use the Paste as plain text button then a special cleanup process will run to remove any special formatting and HTML tags that may otherwise change your text. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text Therefore you have to do your own formatting and spacing.
Whether or not you are copying and pasting go to > Dashboard > Settings > Writing and enable this setting:
Formatting
__ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically
“save changes”IMPORTANT NOTE: When you create a new post, always make sure the Format tool is set to Paragraph before you start typing. It’s in the Visual editor Row 2 first position “style”. See the illustration here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2 If you forget to do that then edit the post, highlight all in the Visual editor, select Paragraph from the Format tool, switch editor to Text then switch back to Visual and click Update.

There are two old Stats pages and they are both available from the classic dashboard. You can go directly to the classic dashboard by logging in here: https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?.
The old Stats pages are
1. https://YourWeirdWebsiteName.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=stats (really old, “classic”). Link is found in the dashboard admin panel in the “Dashboard” drop-down menu (clock symbol).
2. https://wordpress.com/my-stats/ (kinda old, “super classic”). The link for the “old Stats” page with the map is through the classic dashboard then click “View All” on the Stats module.
Or just add a bookmark to a bookmarks toolbar.

I am typing directly in the new editor.
It is always set to paragraph.
This only occurs when you make an edit, any edit, to an *existing post*.

Thanks for that added information for Staff and especially the last sentence. Please be patient while waiting for their response.

Some time in the last week or two, a new version of the editor began removing whitespace from my articles.
Could you share a screen shot of the visual view as well as the HTML view of a post before the editor reverts your changes, as well as a screenshot of both views after the editor removes the spaces? That will help me figure out what’s happening.
Here’s info on how to make a screenshot if you need it:

The new editor is not better, but worse than the older one. Sometimes I scroll down a page and cannot see the end of it. (While it’s perfectly visible in the old editor). And what about personal choice? This editor is not only a faulty programmed interface, one is also almost forced to use it. (Except you go to WP Admin, and Pages or Posts and edit from there). It’s inconsistent as well. When you edit a page or post but clicking the Edit link, either the old or the new editor may open.
But the worst is, what just happened to me, that the new editor moves away empty space. I am using the Polldaddy rating code and it needs a full CTLR-RETURN or COMMAND-RETURN space under it so that the subsequent text will not glue to it. It was perfectly setup with the old editor but editing the page with the new one removed it.
This is really a nasty issue WordPress should care about asap. It’s a very user-unfriendly interface, to make it full …

Hi ipublica! Can you give me the code that you were using that got messed up by the editor?
-
Can you tell whoever you have to that we should have the option of using the editor that works?
-
@elegantzest – There are no plans to remove the classic wp-admin dashboard, so you still have access to the classic editor.
-
@lizthefair
What is happening is that you implemented changes without fully testing them – not for the first time! -
I quite like the new editor, and would switch to it if I trusted it.
I cannot duplicate the problem now, although it seems I am not the only one having it. I think it has to do with the specific tags in the body, perhaps the MORE tag?
-
Let me try to reply to all of you. I don’t know what you mean with the ‘code’ I used. Just text, I am a writer, and do not want to bother about coding, and that’ s what WordPress is made for, right? It’s made for folks like us, so that we are hands free for focusing on content:)
If there are no plans to remove the class dashboard, that’s great news! I love it and sorry, I can’t get along with the new one. It’s counter-intuitive. The functions are to the left, before there were to the right, the color set is strange (these bluish tones are depressive, don’t you feel that?).
I did not implement changes before testing them, WordPress did, right?
No, the MORE tag works in both editors alike.
Here again, the issues:
1) Stripping off of line returns put in the classic editor, using COMMAND+RETURN on Mac and CTRL-RETURN on PC. That alone is a major bug, and is absolutely repeatable, for that matter!
2) Sometimes bottom of a long page is hidden, can’t be seen because sculling to the bottom still hides a section of the page. Again, a major bug!
3) The placement of the functions with the up-and-down buttons on the left border is completely counter-intuitive, why not placing them all to be visible like in the classic editor?
4) Why is WordPress recommending to use the new editor, saying it would provide a ‘better posting experience.’ In my humble view, the very contrary is true.I hope that our discussions get to the knowledge of the top-team at WordPress. Another little annoying thing is that when you open a new site at WordPress.com, you get an email with various links. One link in that email says something like when you get a problem, contact the makers of the software. I did that and you are stopped in your tracks before posting for it will inevitable re-route you to the forum. This is misleading, to say the least, for they pretend to be accessible by direct email, but they are not!
That’s okay with me, but they should then not get people into believing there was something like a direct support line. This may be an option for the (outrageously expensive) VIP service, but not for ordinary users.
So because of that, I posted those questions, intended to reach the management, in another forum post. And I hope this will not stir any confusion.
Thanks for your replies,
Pierre -
Line returns have been stripped out basically forever. If they never did before on your theme, you’re rarely lucky. You will need to use br or div code in future. WordPress.com is blogging software, built in HTML, not word processing software, built to emulate a typewriter.
-
I need a line return, which is written in HTML as ” ” only in one special case. It’s for inserting a code snippet form Pollydaddy to enable the rating of a post. I have tried all and everything but it will glue with the subsequent text if there was only an ordinary line return.
But for the usual usage I agree, those returns are by and large not necessary and Pollydaddy should rather debug their code. But for the moment, I just do it that way.
-
Oops, the editor has stripped the code out, so I just put it in back tick characters.
