new editor problem

  • Unknown's avatar

In the new block-based editor, writing from right to left (in Hebrew), I have been having this issue today:

Whenever I have to use the Backspace key (to correct an error), the text of the block I am editing jumps back into the previous block.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi adaklara,

I’ve done some testing with paragraph blocks but haven’t been able to replicate the jumping behaviour yet — tapping backspace keeps me in the same block. It would be great if you send me these details:

    1. The version numbers of your browser and operating system (both can be found by visiting supportdetails.com.
    2. A numbered list of the steps you worked through including the type of block being used.
    3. Does the issue only affect certain posts or pages, or all of those on odblogiada.wordpress.com?

I’ll then have another look :)

    1. Operating system: Indowa 10 (64-bit).
    Browser: chrome 74.0.3729.131

    2. I am writing regular/ordinary blocks.
    For instance:
I typed מה in one block, Then used ‘Enter’ to start a new block and typed קורה פה
Then I used ‘Backspace’ to delete the final letter (ה), and then קורה פה jumped back to the previous block which now reads:
    מהקורה פה

This has happened several times, though not always. It seems to be fluctuating, but I cannot figure out any regularity here. It even happened once or twice when I tried typing in English. When I wrote the very first block, backspace simply didn’t work at all.

    3. This happened yesterday when I wrote my last post:

    חתיכות הווה קטנות

It has not happened before, but it is happening today too in a post in ‘drafts’ where I am experimenting to see if the problem continues (and it does).

    Many thanks.

Sorry, operating system: *Windows* 10 (64-bit)

    Type of block: regular paragraph.

  • @adaklara, I haven’t seen this behavior at all either. Does it only happen when you’re writing in RTL?

  • Unknown's avatar

@supernovia, it did happen once when I tried writing in English, but it mostly happens when I write in RTL.

  • Very odd. I’m not familiar with Indowa — but I’ll see if I can do anything to duplicate that here (Mac and Chrome, both current).

Any idea how frequently this is happening compared to the times you’re hitting backspace?

  • I really can’t seem to make this happen at all. Is there any chance you’re using a computer with a trackpad built in, and perhaps somehow bumping that sometimes?

@supernovia, ‘indowa’ was my typing error, I did indicate in a subsequent communication in this thread that what I meant was ‘windows’.

I don’t know what a trackpad is, but I am using exactly the same computer as before, and I havn’t had this problem before. It started the day before yesterday. It now happens every time I hit Backspace.

  • Hi there,

I’m able to replicate what you’re seeing.

It looks like it’s an issue with the editor itself, though, which means it will have to be fixed by the team over at WordPress.org. I’ve reported the issue to them, but I’m afraid I can’t tell you when they might fix it. Once it’s fixed there it should automatically be fixed here on WordPress.com as well, though.

You’re welcome to follow along on progress for this in https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/15553, but we’ll also update you here once this is fixed.

Many thanks, @kokkieh. I have just looked at your description in your report, and it is precisely it. Thanks again for your help.

  • You’re very welcome :)

  • Just a quick update: It looks like this has been fixed in WordPress Core, but it might still be a couple of weeks before those changes are merged into WordPress.com – it all depends on when the Core team will release the versions of the editor and WordPress itself that contains the fix.
