New Editor unusable
-
Hi,
I quit wordpress.com because of this new editor in February. I was using Blogger. The simplicity of the editor was refreshing. But I’m back because I don’t want to lose 5 years of posts.
The most annoying thing about the new editor is that black square floating around. It is most distracting and annoying.
As far as I understand the only way to use the old editor is to write /classic and create a new block. That’s very annoying too. Is there a way to get back to the old editor permanently and never see a block again while editing?
Also I don’t see the black ribbon on my blog. How do I get it back?
Thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It is not possible to enable the classic editor by default but you can use the “Classic Block” which is a block you use to can use to insert the classic editor inside of the newer block editor and it has the familiar formatting tools you are used to: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/
The most annoying thing about the new editor is that black square floating around. It is most distracting and annoying.
I’m not sure what you mean by that, can you explain? Perhaps you can take a screenshot so we can understand what you are referring to?
Thanks for the additional info!

Thanks for your response. So every time I start a new post I will have to choose the classic block. Very annoying. I don’t see the use of blocks. Blocks make editing very ugly.
I took a screenshot but I don’t know how to add an image here. You can see it here: http://www.notlar1.com/2020/10/blog-post.html
I know it’s there to add new blocks. But when I’m writing that square is popping up everywhere and distracting. How did you come up with something like this?
I never use blocks. Why are you forcing it on users. I guess it’s useless to complain, there is no turning back.
Can you also help about the disappearing black ribbon on my blog? I used to see the black ribbon and that was useful to get back to editing. What do I need to do to make it appear?
Thanks again.

I understand that you’re referring to the little
+sign – that only appears when you start a new line and helps you to choose the block you want to use. If you just want to write, you can keep writing and ignore that sign, as soon as you start typing it will disappear. As for the black ribbon, I’m not sure what do you mean? I understand that you don’t see it now so you wouldn’t be able to take a screenshot but, could you describe where you used to see it and what exactly was its function?

Why are you forcing it on users.
Most likely because a handful of add-ins are in fact sponsored. Don’t know which but most likely the first few you see such as Calender, Open Tab and Event Checkout.
Otherwise WP would allow users to bypass blocks and head straight for the old editor. It still exists, doesn’t it? Look on it from the bright side. This issue won’t go away for WP and the number of newly created posts will go down dramatically. Myself, I wrote a single post this month as opposed to something between four and 15 previously.
Sponsors usually pay for a certain number of eyeballs. In order to “seduce” customers into using these add-ins WP has sacrificed user-friendliness. Chicken and egg, but it’s never gonna work.
But all those previous posts you say? No admin is gonna touch those ever again. I use the Hemingway theme and it’s broken. One example is the font size used for captions. Used to be smaller than the body text, but no more. That’s beyond sloppy.
Also, nobody is going to add a calender or event to a post from three years ago, so the only money will come from users adding calenders and event to new posts and we’re full circle.
My advice: write your posts in whatever offline editor you use and wait a couple of months if you can. Either WordPress significantly improves their Gutenberg editor or a new competitor with a seamless WP import function will become available. Either way, WP.com is going the way Firefox did. The browser currently has a market share of under five percent.

Thanks. I understand that I can keep writing but I find it very annoying and distracting. They give you a focus option to dim other paragraphs for better focus but they ruin your focus with a flashing plus sign. Very bad interface. And it looks like it won’t get better. I will have to find an alternative.
I put an image of the ribbon here: https://ibb.co/DG789SM I see it on my other blogs not on the one I’m using most.
I guess WP.com does not listen to users. Not a good sign.

Hi ooverlast, that’s speculation and not particularly helpful. Please refrain from accusatory speculation and any attacks on community members. The WordPress.org community created the block editor to meet the needs of the community. Many people enjoy it, and it has led to a proliferation of new block options, including some from third parties, but they were not the reason we’re moving away from classic. It’s just tricky to maintain two code bases and keep everything working right.
My advice: if you hate the block editor, pass along the specific feedback about what is bothering you. Staff here is passing along what specific feedback we can find. If you’ll check back after a few months, we’ve often been able to implement popular suggestions.

@zeynel1, I hear you on the little plus sign. I’ve passed along feedback that it can be distracting, and it should only show briefly and in some circumstance now. If it’s still too distracting, let us know how it would be clearer for you to know you _can_ insert a different block, without having to see the plus sign there.
Also, I looked at the ribbon image and I don’t think I understand what you’re asking there. Could you send a few more details?
-
Thanks.
The black ribbon you saw was from another blog I have.
In my ahmetzeynel.com blog ıt disappeared. I don’t see it anymore. https://ibb.co/qxXgC6Z
The ribbon is useful because it has the “My Sites” link if I wanted to edit the post.
But I guess I can keep another tab open with the editor. Not that important I guess.
Thanks again.
Regarding the plus sign, I don’t like to use the blocks so I don’t want to add another block ever. I am not using WP.com to design pages. I paste my text, edit, add links and publish. There is no need for blocks in this workflow.
The old editor was working fine. But I realize it won’t come back so I’ll stop complaining :) But you really designed an interface with terrible user experience.

The “black ribbon” @zeynel1 is referring to is the Admin bar, which is ordinarily visible to anyone that’s logged into a WordPress.com account.
I see the Admin bar when I visit https://ahmetzeynel.com/ while logged in.

Are you familiar with the WP-Admin editor? It’s still available.
-
@zeynel1 I think I’ve fixed the toolbar. Can you confirm?
And there is an editor in wp-admin. That will also be retired at some point, though, so wherever possible I recommend using Blocks and just letting us know about any problems you’re having with it. We do regularly send feedback in if we find specific complaints (like the black plus sign one above). WordPress is a huge community, and we can’t always change things, but I personally try to send along any feedback that I think can make the block experience more comfortable.
Cheers!

I still don’t see the admin bar at ahmetzeynel.com
I see it on my other blogs.I wonder if it is related to custom domain?
I’ll try wp-admin
Thanks

Oo, good point. Do you want to go ahead and open a new thread on that?
I wonder if it’s an issue with third-party cookies. We’ve spotted a few issues with that recently and it does indeed tend to affect custom domains more.
