New Feature: Domains

  • Unknown's avatar

@foolswisdom: I’m sorry, I don’t think I meant domain mapping. I have the nameservers set to ns1 and ns2.wordpress.com. But I also have the old blog.boredandblogging.com entry in the domain mapping. When I try to type in http://www.boredandblogging.com in the domain section, it tells me I have to pay. And that was my question really, didn’t I already pay to have blog.boredandblogging.com to be set up?

BTW, I sent feedback a couple of days ago and have gotten no response.

    Thank you Engtech and Timethief.
I have registered for my new domain with WP a few minutes ago.
I have redirected my blog there but I get a DNS error message when trying to visit, either using my new URL or the old one.

Do you know how long it takes to have it activated ?

Please disregard my above request !
I got everything working just fine now :)
It takes less than 1 hour to be set up.
My hits and redirections from my old address work properly.

Thanks for all of you supporting this Forum.

    Hi,
Could I possibly direct myblog.wordpress.com to a folder on my site e.g. http://www.mysite.com/myblog/? I would just like to keep my main site different to my blog.
    Thanks in advance.

And what can I do if my country is not yet accepted by PayPal?

    thanks

  • Unknown's avatar

raj72, you could do it with a htaccess redirect although it wouldn’t modify the URL. It would just put your visitor onto your wp.com blog.

Why not just install the wordpress software from http://wordpress.org ?

mancuso5, there’s no current workaround. You can try to see if someone will gift you the credits as that method is in place.

I recently set up specialname.com to route to specialnameONE.wordpress.com (worked great, thanks!) but now I want it to go to specialnameTWO.wordpress.com.

Problem is, I can’t figure out how to undo the assignment to specialnameONE.wordpress.com.

    Any hints? Many thanks.

If I already have a domain, and want it to redirect to my .wordpress.com url…how does that work?

Please read the 6th & 7th paragraphs on page 1 of this thread. Any further questions should be directed to staff by way of a feedback form and the feedback button is located on the top right hand corner of any blog page.
    HTH :)

OK, I read everything I could about the mapping, and I am still having issues.

Some people can see it, some people load with a blank screen. I personally cannot get it to load. I cleared my cache, I checked and the dns is pointing in the right direction, still nothing.

Should I have an idex page loaded at my original domain or not? I have one up in thr meantime saying I’m working on the issues, but is that what is holding the mapping up?

Actually your <A href=”http://momma-monkey.com”>site pulls right up for me. I quick look at the information on your domain shows that the DNS nformation is considered stale only within a few hours so that folks trying to see your site should be getting new data as to where on the net it is. If they’re not, then their ISP is probably caching the DNS information longer than what WordPress has requested them to do so. NetZero has this issue big time for example.

WordPress sets it low so that they can rotate you to the different datacenters that they have.

You can do this on your page that you put up. For those on PCs then can open up a command window and type the following:

    ipconfig /flushdns

That will empty out their DNS cache for their local computer. In theory, their PC should then make a request from their ISP for new DNS data. Hopefully they’ll get the right stuff this time.

    Hope this helps,

I just figured out something here. (Hey those credits already paid for themselves :)

One of the issues I’ve noted was that when you went to mydomain.com, it would occasionally redirect to mydomain.wordpress.com.

How to fix that – When you go Dashboard -> Options -> Domains, it lists the wp.com URL as well as the domain. It defaults to redirecting from the domain to the wp.com URL. There’s a link there labeled “Put blog here.” You click on that to reverse the settings. That way the wp.com URL redirects to the domain.

    I had wondered about that.

“The initial release will not allow you to use a subdomain of a domain that is already connected to a wordpress.com blog. So if you use hill.com or jack.hill.com you cannot use jill.hill.com. In the near future it will be possible for the owner of the first hill.com blog to authorize other hill.com blogs.” … when is this “near future”?

We have had no updates on this so I suggest you send a feedback in to staff and ask.

  • Unknown's avatar

Agreed. Seems like most of the time we only hear about new stuff when it gets rolled out. Even I don’t have a in on what’s coming up in the near future. I’ve been told new themes but time will tell.

The standard WPMu software that wp.com is based on will do what you’re asking. It’s actually kind of fun. :)

Hello I am not able to create blog own my domain How can I do this. My hosted own my server is it possible or to host with wordpress.
    thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Wrong site: http://wordpress.org/support

You may want to explain as to why you’re not able to create your own blog when you get over there. You give folks nothing to help you with I’m afraid.

Regarding “We may offer MX editing…”, is there any way you can hint at how likely that is to happen? (Probably, maybe, doubtfully?) I’d use this feature if I didn’t have to subdomain my blog, but I’ll look for other options otherwise.

    Thanks!

I am planning to have my blog hosted, but will still have wordpress as the journalling source. how will that work?
