New Feature: Domains

You need to get the wordpress software and install it at your host -> http://wordpress.org

You may want to check with your host as they may have an autoinstaller of some sort.

With new google apps on the scene that should take care of the MX factor

  • Unknown's avatar

No it wouldn’t as you still wouldn’t have access to the nameserver records. They would only be usable if you’re your blog here was a subdomain of your domain and, if you’re doing that, you would have control over your MX and the Google apps wouldn’t matter anyway.

  • Unknown's avatar

That was exactly what I was saying. I was under the impression the commenter was saying that they hosted their domain separately. In that case they could use google apps.

i bought a domain name for my wordpress blog (rucksacklife.com) and now want the domain to point elsewhere. The directions in the FAQ don’t work (I never get the email confirmation). Any suggestions?

  • Unknown's avatar

What directions are you looking at? There’s no email when you move nameservers. Please review the instructions on Dashboard -> Upgrades -> Domains as the correct method is stated there.

You get an email when you delete your blog. I hope you’re not doing that.

i have been using rucksack.com as my wordpress blog (instead of rucksacklife.wordpress.com). Now i want to host WP on my own servers, so I need to redirect the domain i bought to a different IP.

I went to Dashboard->Upgrades->Domains and followed these instructions:
    Domain Administration

The following link will take you to an external site where you already have an account. Before you can log in you must reset the password. Copy the number and follow the link below.

To reset your password, click “Retrieve my password” then “Reset Password” and enter your customer number. Then check your email.

    Customer Number: *************

    Manage Your Domains

Then i followed the external link to retrieve my password and the website said it would sent an email to email address *******@gmail.com, but i don’t have a gmail address on file for wordpress. so i cant reset the password.

I’m somewhat more ‘analog’ than digital in my reality… :) So, here is my question: I would love to utilize this yet, it is something that is a bit over my head. Is there a simple step by step process available? Thank you for your time a patience. Imaya

elliottw2, in that case something’s wrong with the actual account. For that you need to drop staff a feedback from your dashboard and explain what is occuring.

Rather strange as your domain record doesn’t show a gmail address either. Something’s up.

  • Unknown's avatar

i have left about 4 messages in the feedback over the past few months with no response :-(

Since Dr Mike says there’s something wrong with your email, and since that’s where the responses to Feedbacks go, perhaps you should email them directly from the email account associated with your blog: email support at wordpress dot com, and include a link to this thread.

the host I’m planning to get is also using WordPress. How’s that?

You’re at the wrong site then. This is a hosting company as well. You need to be over at http://wordpress.org

Where can I buy credits for domain mapping? I don’t find the appropriate link to PayPal.

  • Unknown's avatar

You no longer do so. You just go ahead and click on the upgrade that you want to purchase.

I started a blog ( i.e. myblog.wordpress.com ) a little over a month ago, but I decided to move to bluehost.com since my blog is JavaScript related and wordpress.com restrictions on the use of JavaScript made it difficult to demonstrate my code. However, in the month that I have been at wordpress.com I built up pretty good rankings and would like to get (at least most of) that traffic redirected to my new domain ( blog.mydomain.com ).

I understand domain mapping is intended to direct a domain at worpress.com, but is there any way I can get my myblog.wordpress.com subdomain to redirect to blog.mydomain.com? From a technical point of view I don’t know why there would be an issue, but I understand it may be against policy.

  • Unknown's avatar

All policy matters ought to be directed to staff via a feedback or an email to support at this domain dot com.

I believe there are no offsite redirects. They recommend you take the content out of your WP.com blog and leave one page or a text widget explaining where the rest of the blog is located.

After having created a wordpress blog and mapped it to a domain (after buying credits). Is it possible to remove the first mapped domain and map another domain name to this wordpress blog. (basically i had mapped digitalclickclick.com to digitalclickclick.wordpress.com but later i realized that you don’t allow javascript and other restrictions … so now i want to map another domain -say mydigitalphotostory.com to digitalclickclick.wordpress.com without having to pay for domain mapping again!!! ) you don’t have an update/edit option.
