New follower for blog deleted 3-4 yrs ago!

This morning I got an email notification that I had a new follower for a blog I deleted at least 3-4 years ago! How is this possible?? And why is something that pointless possible?? The deleted blog was nanoreef.wordpress.com. The new follower is WordPress user davisjlamb. According to Google he has a private wordpress blog at http://shadowdawgizzle.wordpress.com/ So there’s no way I can contact him to tell him that unless he has access to an alternate universe he’ll never see blog updates for nanoreef.wordpress.com because in this universe that blog is long gone… Can someone sort out this weirdness for me?

    nanoreef.wordpress.com is no longer available.
The authors have deleted this site.

How weird. I tagged this thread for Staff. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond.

Thank you! I was hoping the sheer bizarreness of the situation would catch the eye of the hardworking techies at WordPress. :-)

You’re welcome. Staff respond to support threads in order of the earliest date stamped threads first and then move forward.

  • Are you absolutely sure the notification was for that blog?

Yes. The blog name is in the email 3 places: Subject line, Name of sender ((email visible only to moderators and staff)), and in the body of the message itself. The blog’s URL http://nanoreef.wordpress.com is in the message body also, though obviously since it was deleted a long time ago, clicking through gets you the “blog deleted” notice. Also, this notification came to an email addy that I set up after I got the blog — which I no longer use on my blogs. Follow notifications for all other blogs go to a different address.

  • Hm, that’s very odd. I don’t see any history of recent followers on the blog, because it was deleted of course, but we’ll look into this.

I had an idea…but it didn’t pan out. I’m not sure if following a blog was possible prior to the time I deleted the blog, but I checked the Internet Archive Wayback Machine to see if I had a “follow” form in the sidebar at any time. The last archive of the blog prior to deletion was Feb 28, 2009 and there’s no “follow” widget/form etc in the sidebar. So there’s no way the “follow” could’ve come from archived pages. That was my best guess. :-)

Since it’s a WordPress user, I guess you could always ask him “how did you do that?” :-)

  • It might come to that. :)

Either way there is no way to follow a deleted blog. I think it’s related to a cleanup job that we’re running on subscriptions right now. Technically, the old subscription records still exist, even though the blog doesn’t, and this particular individual was subscribed prior to the date at which you deleted the blog.

Ah…old follower, new notification. :-) Well, I won’t worry about him thinking he’s gonna get blog updates; I let everyone know I was closing down the blog well ahead of time. :-) Good luck with the ongoing housecleaning. Bits and bytes and pixels are pretty sticky. ;-) Thanks!
