new free site

I’m trying to start a new site & I want to start with the free version at first. I have been fighting this for days. When I get to step 3 of the set up, it asks if I want to register a domain name, transfer a domain name or do domain mapping & it won’t let me go forward with my new site until I choose one. I don’t want ANY of those, I want the free site with a domain of myname.wordpress.com. How do I do this? I have tried different browsers, different computers & nothing will work. I have tried to go direct to the site set up link or to add site under my exsisting sites, nothing works.

Step 2 is where you type in any random word and should be offered a free site. You may have to experiment with the address and perhaps settle for a number (rather than 10 numbers) at the end of your free address. Note that if you’re trying to get the site that matches your username then it has been deleted.

The authors have deleted this site.(If it was deleted by you less than 30 days ago staff could recover it).

Thank you for your reply. I’m not trying to get to the site that was deleted. I’m trying to create a new, free site. When I am on step 2 there is no option for the ‘free’ site anywhere. It says ‘give your site an address’ when I type the name for my new site it comes up with two domain options at the top & when I scroll down to the bottom it simply says “Already own a domain” “Use a Domain I already have” When I click on one of those options it asks me to pay for domain mapping. I only want the free domain that is myname.wordpress.com but I cannot find that option for the life of me. I have even tried different browsers & different computers with no luck at all. I’m so frustrated.

I assume you haven’t ever had a site suspended (which may lock you out of creating a new one). Or are you trying to create a site address that is unavailable? For me at step 2 if I type any random word or phrase I’m offered a free site just below the two custom domains so try typing in a random word and see what happens. Clicking on “use a domain I own” won’t get you a free site. If you’re positive the free option isn’t displaying for you then you can ask a member of staff to check your account by adding the word modlook to the tag box here on the far right.

Thank you for your tips. I finally found it. The free site was the one that I could select right at the top of the list & I was making myself crazy just looking past it. I feel like an idiot. I’m all set now. Thank you so much for you help!
