    Hi Lionel,

    Here’s why this is happening…

In your blog’s reading settings, your front page is currently set to display your latest posts:

    https://asseenbylionel.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php

That explains why creating a new post will display it on the Home page. That page will display any and all new posts.

Now, your page called “Portfolio” is using the “Portfolio Page” page template included in your theme, Photographer. That page template displays all post within the selected Category in the portfolio style.

You can change that category to anything you like, but in your current settings you’ve selected All Categories. (See the dropdown next to “Portfolio Page Category”)

    https://asseenbylionel.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=theme_options

If you only plan to post your portfolio, you can leave this as-is.

So let’s fix this to what you want…

    1. Update your Reading Settings so that the front page is a static page. Do not select a Posts page, just make “Home” your static front page. (How-to article)
    2. Save those changes. :)
    3. Edit your test post that includes a Gallery
    4. Make sure you have Set a Featured Image (How-to article) for that post
    5. Publish the Post
    6. Visit your Home page (see that is static, no posts listed)
    7. Visit your Portfolio page (see that posts from all categories are listed)

Let me know if you hit any snags during those, or if you have more questions afterwards. :)

    Hi Alex,

I have been having some issue with the testing. The posts are going to the portfolio page, I believe correctly. But they also show in the home screen in a slideshow format.

I used another template back in 2012 ( LinWinAdventures) when I was doing more postings and I don’t recall these issues. Not sure if each template has its now quirks or maybe I am just getting older!!!

    Thanks

    Hi Lionel,

If you’ll edit your homepage, here:

    https://linwinadventure.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=139&action=edit

You’ll find a Slideshow shortcode in its body, and the page is using the Homepage page template.

That shortcode creates a slide show that cycles through all the images in your media library:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/slideshows/

The Homepage template also is meant to use a featured slideshow as described here:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/photographer/support/

You do not necessarily have to use the “Homepage” template on your static front page, you can use the Default template. If you do not want a slideshow on your front page, I recommend removing that shortcode, chaning the page template to Default, and then adding your preferred content to the body of the page.

    Hi Alex,

    Sorry to be a pest.
I only referenced my first blog site as the one I first used in 2012. I choose a different template this time to have a slightly different look. I a still trying to get ‘asseenbylionel’ operational. How do I simply everything. Here is what I am hoping to accomplish.

    1. A simple slideshow on the homepage which will feature some of my photos. I will add and delete to this gallery.

    2. A gallery section

3 A section for limited writing.

Hope you can help or is there a different WP theme you can recommend?

    Thank very much

    Lionel

    Hi Alex,
    Update to my last response.

I may be getting there, finally!

Under the Reading Settings I have set front page to Home and Post page to Blog. If I write a new post it goes to Blog which is what I want. I am also able to create a new Gallery which posts to the Portfolio page. That also is what I want. However it also gets posted to the Blog section. Is there a way around that?

That only leave adding a slid show to the home page to show off special images! How do I do that?

    Thanks in advance

    Best regards

Ah, my apologies for looking at the wrong blog. Thanks for understanding and correcting me! :)

You’re definitely coming along, let’s work on those finishing touches…

However it also gets posted to the Blog section. Is there a way around that?

Your Posts page (which you’ve named “Blog”) will display all posts, regardless of category.

The Portfolio page still shows posts, just only of a certain category (you’ve chosen “Uncategorized”) and with a particular display format to show off featured images.

The idea being that any post for your Portfolio is still worthy to be displayed within the context of all your blog’s posts. However, it sounds like that’s not what you want.

We’ll need to do some tweaking if you don’t want any posts to show up in both Portfolio and Blog. Here are the steps I’d recommend:

    1. Visit your Reading Settings
    2. For your Posts page, currently set to “Blog”, select no page (Example)
    3. Save Changes
    4. Add a new category for your posts named “Blog”
    5. Delete the page named “Blog”
    6. Visit your Menu settings
    7. Add the Category page for the “Blog” category to your Menu
    8. Save the menu
    9. As you create new posts in the future, whenever you want the post to appear in your Blog make sure it has the category “Blog” and does not include the category “uncategorized.”

That only leave adding a slid show to the home page to show off special images! How do I do that?

You’ve already created the Home page and given it the Slideshow template. That’s the hard part!

Here’s how to get that slideshow displaying:

    1. Edit the page named “Home”
    2. Click the Add Media button
    3. Select the Upload tab and add your images to be featured on the page. This attaches the images to the page within your media library.
    4. Do not click the “Insert into page” button. Instead, click the X to close the Media Library window. The images will automatically be added to the slideshow after uploading them to the page.
    5. Click the Update button for the page.

Let me know if you hit any snags. :)

    Hi Alex,

Success – I think we have it nailed!

The slideshow on the homepage works. The portfolio area with gallery appears to work and I think I am figuring out the different ways to post to the new Blog catalog page. If I have a feature image on the post it will show a image. If there is no feature image, I have to click on the post to show what images I included in the post. Does that sound correct?

    Thanks for all your assistance.

    Best regards,

    Lionel

    Hi Lionel,

Yup, that’s correct! When you click on the post you’re taken that’s posts page — everything in the body content of the post is displayed, and only that post.

Your blog page is a list of posts — to display an image associated with each post it’ll need to be set as the Featured Image.
