New "hobbled" editor deletes Parent Page set in Classic editor

  • Unknown's avatar

    Repro steps:

    1. In WP Admin on a WordPress.com site with more than 15 pages, create a page named Grandparent and publish it.
    2. In WP Admin, create a second page named Parent and select “Grandparent” as the parent page. Publish the second page.
    3. In WP Admin, create a third page named Child and select “Parent” as the parent page. Publish the third page.
    4. View the third page and note that the path is http:/your-site.com/grandparent/parent/child/
    5. Click Edit on the third page and note that the HE (“Hobbled Editor”) opens instead of the classic editor. Swear.
    6. Save the page and view it.
    7. Note that the path is now http:/your-site.com/child/
    8. Edit the page to fix the path
    9. Note that Grandparent and Parent are not even in the radiobutton list and cannot be selected. Swear.

Great post! I am experiencing exactly the same thing and cannot blog any further until it is fixed.

Note, parent options do seem to appear for 1 level down under the parent, but 2 and beyond is not giving the option to select them in the “HE”. There’s definitely a problem with the “Parent Page” selector for nested paged more than 2 levels deep. I’m relieved in a way its not just me, so hopefully wordpress will get on it right away.

I am experiencing exactly the same thing….

    Add me to the list.

The problem is for both “editing” a page and also when “creating” one. i.e the drop down of options does not show all the parent page options.

I have to say, I have no problem otherwise with the new editor. I know change is unpopular, but it does work faster and look forward to this glitch being corrected soon.

    Hi all,

I have to say, I have no problem otherwise with the new editor. I know change is unpopular, but it does work faster and look forward to this glitch being corrected soon.

We were unable to replicate the glitch you subscribed. If you are still having trouble could you let us know which blog you are having trouble with and if possible provide us with screenshots and browser/operating system information.

The problem is clearly still there not just for me, but several people. The problem is on all my blogs , the primary one here https://blantyreproject.wordpress.com

The screenshot of the problem is here
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/5ni96nk2gn1pk3p/page.jpg?dl=0

Mac OSX, Safari & Firefox (both brewers have the parent page problem)

I can choose a parent page, but only if its one level above. Assigning nested pages 2 deep or below, just aren’t appearing anymore. SO frustrating and unable to blog now, as i can’t assign navigation.

It can be fixed quite simply surely if you just fix it to show the drop down allowing to choose from ALL published pages.

  • Unknown's avatar

Quite simply ,the problem is when you go to choose parent page when editing or creating a page, all the pages published aren’t listed anymore, and the correct page wanted, is often not listed. Look forward to a fix.

Im at a standstill since yesterday until it can be sorted.

I’m having the same issue with my blog.

If you find any solution, please let me know :-)

bdukes, the exact same problem now exists on my website

Here is a link to a screenshot showing the problem. Look at the dropdown menu on the left, showing ‘Parent’ pages to choose from. It is only showing a few of them, even though I have well over a hundred.

This new editor is completely inferior to the one you let us use just last week.

I read on a couple of blogs that I can use this link to edit already existing WordPress.com pages, and set them to any parent page.

    http://INSERT_NAME_OF_YOUR_BLOG_HERE/wp-admin/edit.php

But there were no step-by-step directions.

Can someone explain how to use this to edit an already existing page? for instance, this one: “https://kaiserscience.wordpress.com/astronomy/planets/”

Being able to move a page, to have the correct parent page, is absolutely critical.

  • Unknown's avatar

I think it best we don’t try to circumvent the issue, for those older links may just stop working.

WordPress, please can you acknowledge a problem exists with the parent page drop down on the new editor, not showing all the pages. That needs fixed and for the sake of sparkanthologyeditor’s initial post, kaiserscience and my problem all being similar. Lets all stick to topic here and get the Happy Engineers to resolve first and foremost.

I think the issue is, with exception of top level pages, its not showing OLDER nested pages, i.e before the new editor appeared. The only pages i can choose from are either top level or the few pages I’ve created since May 2015. Previous to that, i can’t see my older pages in the drop down, especially those nested 2 or more levels deep. Hope this helps track down the problem and a fix from engineers.

Thanks everyone for your feedback and helping us track down this glitch. With your help we were able to confirm this as occurring in the new editor. Currently we do not have the resources to fix this issue right away, but we are working on updates to the editor that will address this and other reported issues.

If you are experiencing trouble, you may use the Classic Editor found at wp-admin. To edit a page in the Classic Editor:

    1) Visit https://example.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=page (where example is replaced with your site name).

    2) Find the page in the list or search for the page.

    3) Once located, hover over the page name and click the edit link that appears on hover.

    4) Edit the page using the Classic Editor.

I would also like to assure you that their are no plans to remove the Classic Editor in the future. .

Thanks! Just that acknowledgement helps; there’s nothing more frustrating than dealing with a bug nobody else can reproduce.

I would also like to assure you that their are no plans to remove the Classic Editor in the future.

That being the case, why remove the easy access to the Classic Editor from the New Editor?

New Editor: Fast, user-friendly, easy to use for authors and contributors.

Classic Editor: Powerful, familiar, convenient for site administrators who already spend more of their time in WP Admin.

So if both have great value and neither is going away … why did WordPress take away the easy link for those who’d prefer to “Switch to Classic Editor”? If anything, logic calls for the addition of a link in the Classic Editor to “Switch to New Editor.”
