New image uploads are cropped!

  All recent large image uploads appear is severely cropped versions.
  They are the same size as thumbnails but are actually a cropping(?) of one side of the image.
  I have shut down all plugins but the problem persists.

  Previously uploaded large images are OK and I can place them full width on a new page. It’s only recent uploads that have the cropping problem.
  I’m a relative newbie but I certainly am stumped.
