New Log-in Procedure

According to WordPress dashboard instructions I went to “settings” where I had to ask for a verification number and give the number of my cell phone.
I do not have a cell phone, so I asked my husband to give me his number. He has two blogs on WordPress, too, but he has not been bothered, and yet has the same IP as I. We received ten (!!!) additional verification number and was asked to print those. Instead of printing, I made a screen shot, which seems to have upset whoever I was dealing with.
From then on, more new numbers have come in each with a beep so that my husband had to close the phone.
    Am I getting hacked?
If you answer me, keep in mind that I might not be able to come here again today, because the log-in story is too disturbing.

Two-step authentication is not required, but we do recommend it for security reasons.

The codes we asked you to print out are there in case you lose or do not have access to the mobile phone with the authentication app, so you can log in.

If you do not have your own phone, you may choose to disregard the two-step recommendations.

We explain the process, as well as the purpose of the backup codes and how to disable two-step authentication here:

I do not have a cell phone so cannot enable two step authentication but there is a banner at the top of just about every page on the dashboard telling me that I must! Can I ignore it?

Two Step Authentication gave big problems when I activated it (to try it out), deactivated it, and then reactivated it. The problem was that it no longer recognised any of the ten backup codes, even though it had just generated them. Neither the old or the new codes were recognised.

Fortunately I had not logged out, and so I started again and generated a third set of codes… which did work. But if I had logged out, then what… locked out?

Also, when printing the codes, the first attempt to print them just resulted in three pages with wordpress headers, but no codes. Only on the second ‘print’ attempt did the codes actually print.

So my experience is that the WordPress Two Step Authentication was easy to set up (thank you!), but the process has unpredictable results when as a user I changed my mind.

@autahi, I’m very sorry you had difficulties with your two-step authentication process. If you’d like, you can pursue this further privately by sending us an email, and we can look into it for you.

@emeraldartstarotandastrology, the two-step process is entirely voluntary at this time, so you can safely disregard the messages.
