New Page Error – The response is not a valid JSON response.

  Creating new WordPress Site hosted on Google Cloud. Creation of new pages worked fine, but the URL slug included index.php. Changed permalink to Postname, and now getting error message ‘Updating failed. Error message: The response is not a valid JSON response’ when trying to create any new page.
