New Page not working

  • Unknown's avatar

I tried to add a New Page to my website and blog http://www.chindia-alert.org. Although I set the page attributes to be subordinate to one of the existing pages, the new page was set-up as if it had no parent, even though when I clicked the All Pages display, it was in the right position.

So, I deleted the new page. Unfortunately it still appears in the home page as “Pattern of Chinese investnment etc”. But when I click it, I get “Error 404 Not found”.

That page no longer appears in the All Pages display, so I cannot delete it.

    1. How do I delete it?

    2. And how do I get the new page facility to work again?

    Many thanks.

    Hello!

    Couple things:
    1. Your theme is retired.
    https://theme.wordpress.com/retired/under-the-influence/

    Possible Solution:
    2. If you used a specific template for your pages you may need to delete that child page from the parent page. If you don’t then when you move the parent page over to the menu all the child pages follow. Thus, you may have deleted the page itself BUT not from the template.
    See here: http://pbrd.co/15KlFDC
–>You may need to delete/de-link the specific child page in question from the parent page template.

    thanks PCosta88

the problem is not with the parent page but with the child page. I did not move the parent page. The child page did not attach itself to the correct parent page (even thought eh ALL Pages display said it did). I deleted the child page and even though it no longer shows in the All Pages display, it still shows as a (parentless) tab on my website. But when you click it you get error 404.

    Hmm..

I found some support documentation. Does any of it apply to your situation?

    Create a Custom 404 Page

    chindiaalert,
You might have to remove a link to the non-existent page in a custom menu. However, I didn’t find “Pattern of Chinese investment etc” among your header navigation menu links. Have you already resolved the issue?

@PCosta88 – the link is about error 404 for posts; mine is a Page.

@musicdoc1 – if you go to www,chindia-alert.org – you will see that as a tab on the second line below the banner. What do you mean by custom menu?

    thanks, anyway.

@musicdoc1 – I found the custom menu page and successfuklly removed the offending empty page.

I tried adding it again as a new page. That appears in the custom menu, but not in the All Pages menu and hence is not listed under the tabs on my home page and cannot be found by my readers!

Ah hah! But let’s not forget that it will not be added to All Pages again until you create and publish it again. Hope you kept a copy. You said above,

So, I deleted the new page. Unfortunately it still appears in the home page as…

Therefore, it appears that you have now added a link in the custom menu to a non-existent page, essentially the same link that you had removed from the custom menu earlier.

musicdoc1 – thank you for your help. It has worked and now my new page is in the right place in the menu.
