I have same issue and it looks like for me it was due to using spaces in pswd. It is suggested these days to use passphrase instead of pswd but it looks like wordpress and I have noticed other sites as well don’t work with this. In this case it lets you change or enter the pswd with spaces but you can’t login with them or if you omit untill you reset or change again and not use spaces. It would be good if it would tells you you can’t use spaces or better yet prompts this when you try.

Spaces should work.
@miaellman, can you verify that URL of the site you’re working with for me?

You cannot generate a password for another username account that you did not register.
You can have either a public or a private blog and there is no limitation on the total number of contributors to any blog. If you’d like to invite others to publish posts or help approve comments on your blog, you can invite them to be a Contributor, Editor, or Author. If you want users to receive updates each time you publish new content you can invite them to be a follower/viewer.
To change blog visibility to Private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3. See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings
See here please:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/ and here http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/The person will have to register a username account but does not need to register a blog. That requirement is because the software has to be able to differentiate between hackers and official users and allow access only to those with username accounts and official roles on the blog.
They will need to click the “Accept Invitation” button in the invitation email. If they are logged into their WordPress.com account, they will be taken directly to your blog. If not, they will be taken to the log-in screen, where they can either log in or create a new user account.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/selecting-a-strong-password/
https://en.support.wordpress.com/passwords/Note that users who create a new WordPress.com account at that point will still need to return to the invitation email and click the “Accept Invitation” button after doing so.
Lastly, there is a built-in spammer prevention so send out only 10 invitations at one point in time and then wait and manage those before sending out 10 more.
If the invitees still have issues then provide their usernames here, or their email addresses which the software will redact ie. hide so only Staff can see them. Then type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for Staff help. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question Then please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond. @designsimply
I apologize for the overlapping. I did not refresh and I`m accustomed to Staff only answering the modlooked threads. Sorry. :( -

Hi Designsimply,
I´am working on ny.promedic.com – and have tried to recreate an user/password for a new user – but it dosen´t work. The website is in a redesign phase – so he should be able to edit text etc. -
@miaellman, it sounds like ny.promedic.com might be using the free WordPress software but is not setup here at WordPress.com, so I will try to help you with your question and then direct you to the appropriate forum where you can ask for further help if needed.

This really isn’t enough information to go on. When you post a help request for an issue like this one, it would be good to describe what happens. Do you get an error message? Did you test the new password yourself and verify the problem? Did you try manually creating a password instead of using the generated one? Does the older password still work after you make the change? Are you absolutely certain you are looking at the correct staging server?
I would recommend re-posting your question and including as much detail as possible about the problem, including answers to the question above, in the volunteer-based forums at http://wordpress.org/support/ or talking with your web host directly to see if they are able to help.
