New Post Editor removes formatting

  • Unknown's avatar

When I edit an existing post using the NEW editing page, the format is eliminated: all of the paragraphs are condensed into a single one, and embedded Youtube videos are replaced with the written URL for the video. Can I get WordPress to default to editing with the OLD interface, so that things will work again?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,
If you are copying and pasting from a word processing document like Microsoft WORD go to http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text Note that the paste from WORD button was been removed from the editor, and using the post as plain text icon http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text removes all formatting. Therefore you have to insert the formatting and spacing.

Please go to > Dashboard > Settings > Writing and enable this setting:
    Formatting
__ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically
    “save changes”

If you are copying and pasting from a word processing document like Microsoft WORD go to http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text Note that the paste from WORD button was been removed from the editor, and using the post as plain text icon removes all formatting. Therefore you have to insert the formatting and spacing.

Blog editors and word processors are not the same and do not work the same way. The web standard is one blank line only, so you cannot add more blank lines by pressing return repeatedly like you would do with a typewriter or in a word processing application. If you want to learn how to format and space your posts and pages see:

P.S. When you create a new post, always make sure the Format tool is set to Paragraph before you start typing. It’s in the Visual editor Row 2 first position “style”. See the illustration here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2 If you forget to do that then edit the post, highlight all in the Visual editor, select Paragraph from the Format tool, switch editor to Text then switch back to Visual and click Update.

YIKES! I see a duplicated paragraph up there. That was not intended and I apologize.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks – I didn’t see that 2nd row of commands before, the ones revealed by clicking the toolbar toggle button.

I noticed that aspect of no formatting for paragraphs when I copied and pasted. It used to be so easy.
I now have to highlight a paragraph and click on the formatting drop-down menu then click on Paragraph. —for each paragraph. This doesn’t work when you highlight the entire article obviously. so it is time consuming. And tedious.
Why would wordpress make copying and pasting disappear when you are importing a Word doc?? What happened? And why do you guys have to keep mucking up things that work just fine at our end of things?

I have made the mistake of using the new post editor two or three times. Now I can’t get back to the old post editor window which I much prefer. Can a button link be added to the new post editor so that the old editor can be accessed.

The new post editor does not allow aligning images with text, which the old post editor allowed quite nicely.

I would really like to get back to the old post editor please!

Insert your picture. Then click on it. When you click on it, a tiny almost invisible line of icons will appear just above the image. (Hard to see sometimes – It gets lost in other stuff, other text above the image.) Here you can set the alignment with the aligning icons. But easier to do if you click on the tiny Pencil icon. This takes you to the image edit page. Scroll down to where it says Advanced, click on it. This opens the section where you can set the margins. If it doesn’t show, just scroll till you see it.
I don’t know why designers feel they have to hide everything. Maybe they think it is funny.

I just tried out the new editing format and I have to say it SUCKS. It has basically the same tools, but they are more time consuming to use – having to click on the little arrows to get what you need to get to. Why do site designers want people to have to click and click and click?
The other MAIN issue is the color of the text. It is too light against that awful background. It blends in. At first I don’t see it. I look and look and finally realize it is there but the text is way too light. Good sites, well-built sites need to have readable text. They need to have links that don’t disappear into the background color. Designers don’t need to hide everything, or cloak it in light text or arrows. That practice just makes it more difficult for us to use.
I prefer the old edit page. Everything is right there, all I have to do is scroll to get to what I want. No time gobbling clicking.

Why do site designers want people to have to click and click and click?

They are catering to mobile users, who according to CISCO apparently outnumber those on this planet who own toothbrushes. See here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/new-editor-feedback

    That is funny.
So if we own a tooth we don’t count.
that’s a very designer elitist attitude.
Designers are obviously smart, so smart they ought to be able figure out a way to satisfy all of us!
People that can’t afford mobile products shouldn’t be shut out because they are too poor to own a mobile phone.

oops – if we own a tooth brush we don’t count….
    sorry for the missing word.

I wanted to add some levity to a heavy issue so included that for comic relief. http://60secondmarketer.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/MobileVsToothbrushes.0013.jpg

As for me, I do not own and do not wish to own a mobile device. My hubby has them all and I do not want or need or use any of them.

Sorry for my elitist comment. didn’t realize you were/are one of the forum experts.
