New post form on Windows 8 tablet
-
Hi guys,
The new post editing form is quite good, even great, except for two issues I am having.
One, I really would like to get the hierarchical display and selection of categories back. Please!!!
Second and perhaps more important, the category and tag fields are useless on IE (touch) on a Windows I tablet. You can kind of select them but when you type nothing happens. If you hit enter it reacts by inserting whatever is selected in the drop down but that is all. Type a normal character and it is just swallowed.
Cheers

Hi Per,
Thanks for the feedback and the additional information! I don’t have any form of Windows touch tablet (my wife briefly had an early version of the Surface but we foolishly left it where my toddler son could reach it and . . . well . . . let’s just say we don’t have it anymore), so forgive me my ignorance.
I noticed that the version of IE that you are using is 10. Does your tablet allow it to upgrade to 11 or is it locked in? Speaking of tablets, which kind are you using (just so we can try and get as close to replicating this as possible). Also, do you have or can you install any third party browser, such as Firefox or Chrome? If so, do they experience the same trouble?
I think that’s all of the questions I had for now. Thanks again and in advance for the information!

Hi,
It is a surface 3 pro and I am NOT using IE 10. It is IE 11 and it is really the only touch browser available on Win 8. In any case I use IE for everything (also in desktop mode where the post editor works fine btw) so I am not really keen on changing that.
Anyway, in touch mode (modern UI) it’s IE that is the option, period.
Cheers

Don’t worry, I wasn’t suggesting that you switch to a different browser. I was only trying to track down what the issue is. I ask because while (as I mentioned), I don’t have a tablet, I do have the ability to emulate one using some specialized software, and I haven’t been able to replicate the problem which you’re describing. Categories and tags can be added to and removed from a post without any issue when I try.
To clarify once again, when you create a new post using the new editor, and you click the gear icon to edit the settings and expand the sidebar (if necessary), when you click in the tags or categories section, what happens? Will that section not open? Or does it open but you cannot put your cursor in the text sections for tags or categories?

When I tap on either the tag or categories field it opens a drop down with the categories or last used tags in alphabetic order. However, if I type using the touch keyboard it just swallows the keys except the enter key which selects and inserts the topmost item in the drop down list.
There is no visible text cursor in the text box itself and I cannot get one there no matter how I tap.
I have the same behavior on my two Acer tablets (same windows and IE versions)

P.S.
It’s night around here so I’m about to go offline until tomorrow. -
Thanks for all of the additional information. I have put this in front of the developers who work on that editor. As soon as I have anything from them, I will let you know!
