New posts published on front page despite post number limit
-
Hi all,
I’d appreciate your help with an issue I am facing: every time I publish a new post, that post goes as usual on the front page as I have set to have the newest posts listed first. BUT, I have a setting of 7 posts per page in place and all the first seven posts are sticky so I expected any new post to go on the second page directly which is not the case. I always end up with 8 posts on the first page despite the settings.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Adrian

Hi Adrian,
I have a setting of 7 posts per page in place and all the first seven posts are sticky…
I counted 13 posts on the front page of https://blogcalatoriiinfamilie.wordpress.com/. Are you referring to a different site?

If the regular position of a post marked sticky is on the front page, then it will be stuck to the top of the front page and excluded from the blog stream that follows. Marking numerous posts as sticky, with all of the them on the front page — perhaps particularly if the posts per page setting and number of sticky posts is equal — might cause confusion in the automated system and produce the incorrect result you’ve described. I’ll tag the topic for staff attention, because it might be a glitch.

Hi Musicdoc1,
Thanks for your thoughts. I am transitioning to http://www.turistinfamilie.ro but the same symptoms are taking place on either instance. The only workaround is to change the publish date to an earlier date than the last sticky post.
This is not convenient as I have to “manage” all publish dates instead of keeping them anchored to reality.

Hi there,
As @musicdoc1 already said, this is normal behavior when dealing with sticky posts. You can alternatively use a featured posts slider on your home page to have the sticky posts rotate at the top while your normal posts appear below them. Here are the themes that support that feature:

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

Adrian,
Without modifying publish dates, if the posts per page setting is 7, and your earliest 7 posts are marked sticky, then the 8th post would appear at the bottom of the 7 sticky posts, and the first (earliest) post would appear on page 2. That’s because after the 8th post is added the normal position of the first post will then be on page 2. The first post will now appear twice: once in the blog stream and once as a sticky post.
Adding a 9th post, without modifying publish dates, would have the following results:
1. The 9th post would appear on the first page below the 7 sticky posts, but above the 8th post.
2. The 2nd post (second earliest) post would appear among the sticky posts and also on page 2 above the first post. -
Edit:
“then the 8th post would appear at the bottom of the 7 sticky posts on the first page of the blog…” -
Hi again,
thanks again @musicdoc1 for the insights. What I wanted to accomplish is to get the 8th post on the second page and only list the sticky articles on the front page.

Yes, I know. Was just explaining how it works by design. It seems that with posts per page set at 7 the only way to have exactly 7 posts on the front page, each of them marked sticky, is to have only 7 posts published, each marked sticky. Each subsequent post from 8-14 will bump the normal position of one of the sticky posts onto page 2, while adding posts 8-14 to the first page, since sticky posts don’t count against the posts per page tally unless their normal positions are on the first page.
Posts 15-21 will bump the normal position of one of the sticky posts onto page 3, etc.
