New pricing questions

    Greetings!
I want to upgrade from free to Personal. The pricing page is showing me $4/mo ($48 annual charge) with free domain registration for a year (or $18). That’s awesome.

After a year, the annual payment then is $66/year (or $5.50/month).

    So my questions are:

    1. Should I assume that the ongoing cost of just a site is $48?
    2. Might that price change independent of the domain registration?
    3. Is there a way of cancelling the upgrade (reverting back to free, with ads)?
    4. What if I don’t need a special domain (that doesn’t have “wordpress” in it), but I want to get rid of ads? Is there an upgrade for that?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @sigotratando! I’d think of it as hosting at $48/year, and the domain is $x/year ($18 for .com) with the first year free as a promotion.

You could have a domain registered elsewhere and just use the hosting if you’d like. Or if you already have a domain with many years of registration on it, you wouldn’t need to pay more for your second year here.

Yes you can revert back to free if you’d like, and we can help you sort out how to do that gracefully: making your free address primary for a while, even with a paid plan, for example, gives search engines time to update their links to your site.

And, we do have an upgrade that only gets rid of ads if you only need that. The bundles are just a better deal.

Does that help? If not, send more details and we’ll go from there.

Thanks! Those answers were very helpful.

The problem with the bundles is that there is more there than I want/need. I only want to get rid of ads (thanks for that link!), add a couple of addons (like Table of Contents), and increase the media storage (if I need it).

It seems that the domain registration is a mandatory part of the Personal bundle. The questions here that I have are:

    • Isn’t talkingonthethink.wordpress.com already a domain (or subdomain)?
    • Couldn’t I just keep that domain without the extra domain registration bit?
  • Hi there,

Isn’t talkingonthethink.wordpress.com already a domain (or subdomain)? Couldn’t I just keep that domain without the extra domain registration bit?

Yes, it is a free subdomain that you can use to get to your site. It would work just fine. You do not need a custom domain, but many users prefer to purchase one since they are able to remove .wordpress.com and choose something more succinct and potentially professional looking.

    Hope this helps.

So how do I upgrade to a Personal site without having it bundled with the domain registration?

You can purchase Personal and skip the domain option. Let us know if you have trouble with that purchase!
