new product or editing a product

My right hand menu has changed in woo commerce so that I cannot allocate a new product a parent and child category. I phoned my host , and they said I need to play about, but I’ve played for too long. I used to be able to tick the boxes on the right and the new product would appear in the right place on my website. Please help. I’m wasting a lot of my time right now.
