[spam links removed]
Thank you.

Did you read the sticky post at the top of the forum??
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/regarding-referrer-spam?replies=1
Please note the paragraph:
Please, do not post about Referrer Spam to the forums, as we don’t want to provide any further publicity for the spammers.

I won’t give any URLs, but I’d like a more complete explanation of what is happening, rather than just calling it “referrer spam.” Why does is often seem to involve a URL shortener? What is someone gaining by driving traffic to my blog?
Thanks in advance!

The complete explanation provided by Staff is what we Volunteers ie. auxclass has pointed to. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/regarding-referrer-spam?replies=1 How to proceed is stated in that sticky post. Searching the forums will also bring up threads on the topic.“Some background: what you’re experiencing is called “Referrer Spam”, and it’s an unfortunate side effect of the way statistics tracking works. Spammers take advantage of the referrer logs and visit your blog from phantom URLs that they are actually trying to promote, in the hope that you see them in your logs and click them.
In the meantime, you can rest assured that there is no security risk here, to you or to you blog. It’s just an annoyance, but one we will hopefully be able to get rid of very soon.” https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/tons-of-hits-from-spam-domain?replies=29#post-548475
The aim is to get you to click the links! They get paid every time someone click their links.

rinth1989, please be careful about not posting those links in the future. When I was waiting for this page to pull up my mouse’s cursor ended up on the links when the page finished loading. One wrong move and I could’ve accidentally clicked those links! That is not something I’d want to do!

timethief – your explanation was not included in the link provided by auxclass. Thanks a lot for connecting the dots for me — if they get paid for every click, that’s why they are using some new URL shorteners that PPC.
I appreciate you learning me up! Will be reporting these from now on.

@cparente
Hi there. I’m glad what I posted helps. I assume these people get paid by the click but who really knows exactly what goes on in the spammer’s world? It’s darn annoying that this is going on but it does not affect our Google page ranking, and we can run other third party non-Javascript stats programs too, which expand our knowledge of uoy blog metrics. -
Very cool timethief, thanks for the links I’ll check them out! I’ve already got feedjit on my .com blog, hadn’t heard of the others.
I also use QuantCast, which never seems to be discussed much around here. I’ve posted previously asking why, since they claim they have a cookie on every WP blog.

All WordPress.com blogs are quantified. This is not surprising given that WordPress.com runs advertising on our blogs. http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/ I think the reason it’s not discussed is because this is a multiuser blogging platform and we bloggers cannot access the files to insert the code — only Staff can.

Thank you for explaining this – I too have been wondering just what they were gaining – now I know, I know not to click on them. On the bright side though, I just realised that although they inflate my page views so my days views aren’t quite what they appear at first. Once I take the spam out of the equation, I am getting a higher proportion of clicks than I thought I was – if that makes any sense :)
I like silver linings ;)

TT — we can’t insert code, but we can get some really interesting stats. Just go to quantcast.com and insert your URL. Really interesting to compare those numbers with what Google Analytics via WP gives me.
