New registration model for .fi domains from 5.9 – Need help
-
Got a letter from FICORA mentioning that after the 5.9, they are no longer responsible for domain registration and if I want to make sure I keep my domain, I need to register it at my registrar before September 2016. You are my registrar. Please advice how to proceed
Here the letter:
NEW REGISTRY-REGISTRAR MODEL FOR FI-DOMAIN NAMES
The operational model for fi-domain names will change on 5 September 2016 as the new legislation enters into force.
• Finland adopts the internationally established registry-registrar model which means that in the future, domain name holders will obtain all services related to their domain names from their own registrar.
• After the change, only domain name registrars can apply for fi-domain names and perform related changes.
• The current domain name system and related user IDs will cease to exist on Friday, 2 September at 16:15. The new system intended only for registrars will be opened on Monday 5 September 2016 at 10:00.NO IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED:
• The change does not require domain name holders to take immediate action.
• Domain names continue to be normally valid after 5 September.
• You will not need a domain name registrar until you want to renew your domain name or make other related changes.COMBINATIONS OF FIRST AND LAST NAME ARE AVAILABLE FOR APPLICATION
• In the new model, everyone can apply for combinations of first and last names (firstnamelastname.fi).
• If you wish to have a domain name combining your first and last name, you should register it before September.WHAT DOES THE NEW MODEL MEAN IN PRACTICE?
• After the change, the first point of contact in all issues related to fi-domain names is your own domain name registrar, not FICORA.
• Registrars will provide all the services related to fi-domain names, including applications, renewals, transfers, switching registrars, terminations, and updating details.
• Domain name holders can no longer modify their domain names in FICORA’s fi-domain name service as the domain names are managed by registrars.
• No new registration or renewal fee is charged when the domain name is placed under the registrar’s management.
• Unlike before, there will be no local presence or age requirements for fi-domain name holders.
• Foreign companies, organisations and private end-users can also apply for an fi-domain name.WHO IS A REGISTRAR?
The registrar is often the one that has provided you
• internet access
• home page
• or email address. You can check whether your service provider will act as a registrar after the change. You can search for registrars at https://domain.fi/s/FI/IspSearch or contact your service provider directly. FICORA continues to be responsible for the technical operation of fi-domain names and will supervise and guarantee that registrars offering fi-domain name services provide the highest quality of service. Hi there,
You are my registrar.
Your domain is mapped here, which makes us your web host, but we’re not your registrar as your domain is not registered with us.
It’s not possible to register .fi domains with WordPress.com, nor to transfer an existing domain to us, so we are also not able to act as your registrar.
I suggest you try searching Google for .fi registrars and move your domain registration to one of them. Then you can keep mapping the domain to us as you’re currently doing.
