I have an active site on SquareSpace. I want to migrate to WordPress, but it will take me some time to design a site. Can I design a WordPress site using the same domain name without interfering with my existing site?

    Hi there!

Yes, you can absolutely create a new site with us and point the domain to WordPress.com when it’s ready. This will ensure your current Squarespace site remains live while you work on your WordPress.com site. You don’t actually have to move your domain to WordPress.com until you’re ready to do so. And even if you do transfer the domain to us, you can keep it pointed to Squarespace while you work on your new site.

May I know a little bit about the site you’ll be building? Are there any specific features you’re looking for in your new site? This will help us suggest a WordPress.com plan for you that best suits your needs.

For example, if you need features that require a plugin — like creating an online store — our Business plan will be perfect for you. This plan gives you access to a wide array of hosting features, including access to 24/7 live chat support (on the yearly plan), bulletproof security, automated software updates, real-time backups, and more.

Of course, you can choose any of our other plans if you’re looking for a site with fewer features.

Creating a site without a domain

When creating a new site, you can skip over the step where it asks you to enter a domain. You can enter a free .wordpress.com address in the search box to create a new site without needing a custom domain.

When your new site is ready, you will have instant access to the features enabled by your WordPress.com plan, and you can start building your site without having to point the domain away from your live Squarespace site.

Then, when you’re ready to take the site live at your domain, you have several options:

    1. You can transfer the domain to WordPress.com. With a yearly WordPress.com plan, you get a free domain registration credit for the first year. You can use that credit to transfer your domain to us.
    2. Alternatively, if you prefer to keep your domain with your current registrar, you can connect it to your site using a domain connection (free with WordPress.com plans).

Not sure about the differences between the two? We’ve got a page that explains the differences between transferring a domain vs. using a domain connection.

Hope that helps! Feel free to tell us more about your site so we can share a personalized suggestion with you. :)
