New Site

I am interested in a new personal site (with the goal to be upgrading to a premium site for moneitization within a year). I understand that I will pay up front annually, but am I required to sign up for a contract longer than the initial one year period? I had actually considered Bluehost because of their $2.95 monthly fee, but they require I sign up and pay up front for 3 years to get their introductory price. This is a developing idea and, as a woman struggling with medical bills following the death of my mother in November to cancer, I am extremely hesitant to sign up for a long-term contract in the case that it does not work out.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

@divadarling845621159 – I am truly sorry to hear of your loss, and completely understand the concerns with signing a long-term contract.

You can also get started with the free plan and upgrade when you decide you are ready. The option is always available.

You are correct about the paid plans – they do not bill monthly.

With WordPress.com you pay for either one year at a time or two, and the choice is yours.
The option to choose between 1 year and 2 is shown during plan checkout and it will look like this:

    Have a great day!

To add to the earlier reply from @cookgardensew:
The default setting for upgraded plans is for auto-renew to kick in approx one month before the year is up. This is because most people, having gone to the trouble of developing a site with a custom domain name don’t wish to lose it by forgetting to renew. However if, having gone to all the trouble of setting up a custom domain and gaining a presence on the Interweb (necessary if you eventually wish to monetize your site), you only wish to do that for 12 months then you can ensure that staff cancel the auto renew setting before 11 months has elapsed so you don’t continue with your upgrade.
